This feels like the beginning of the end

Well I've worked for RM for over 10 years, and for most (if not all) of those years colleagues have been saying that we've hit rock bottom, that this is the end of the postal service in this coutry as we know it. I've previously taken these statements with a pinch of salt. But I think that what I witnessed today finally makes me believe that this has come to pass.
I work on collections. Today some of our staff were instructed to take out walks which had 'lapsed', while the rest of us had to wait around waiting on vehicles which were still out on delivery. So, lets get this straight: businesses are paying for a collection, while the person that's meant to be doing that collection is out delivering mail or hanging around waiting on a van. And this is supposed to be progress? Of course, this is the tip of the iceberg, the postal service in the country has been slowly dying on it feet for many years now. I'm sure it can get worse. God, I hope I'm not in the job to witness it.

I don't see what's so bad about it. People might be getting their mail later but that hardly makes the service dreadful.

Don't get me wrong; if senior management have their way the service will be driven to the ground, but at the moment it's still a good service that a private company could never provide.

He does have a point, all those SMEs and POs, whilst not the big income makers, do have an input to revenue but more importantly to good customer relations. My office is the same, deliverys running over and no vans being available for collections (not that I care anymore, I just come in do my hours and go home).

On deliveries I would agree to a certain point, however packets are suffering in most DOs that I am aware of and the OPs point was about collections rather than deliveries. If we can't collect the mail on time and as per contract how can we expect RM to keep the contract and make a profit. They really should be looking after that side before worrying about lapsing walks etc.

The Quality of Service across the board at RM is secondary to making money, or at least giving the appearance on a spreadsheet as generating a profit. The short-term gain is doing tremendous damage to the long-term future of RM.

Current RM management practice has been shown to be falling short of what is required to manage the business properly, as the various independent and government-sponsored reports have shown over the past few years.

The biggest scandal is for the government to stand back and do nothing to halt the current de-stabilising of RM, the wrecking of the Pension Fund and place in jeopardy thousands of jobs and the future of RM.

Yeah I didn't really mean to contradict. It's just the Daily Mail propaganda that tries to paint the workforce as lazy good for nothings that is annoying. Things aren't all downhill.

Things have not collapsed totally in spite of what the managers have been doing but it's only a matter of time before the majority of posties up and down the country stop being wlaked over and just fall back to their position of 'I'm only doing my job as per my contract' and the whole of RM will then collapse into a muddled heap.
