Help Please Maximum pouch weight going up Hill

Hi,

Can anybody tell me what the maximum pouch weight is going up a hill.

I know the normal pouch weight and the reduction matrix but somebody in our office said that when walking up a steep hill it was only 8kgs

Does anybody know the correct weight.

This card given out has it on it - 2 weights depending on steepness of hill

Pouch Weights
Must be monitored and adequately controlled – the maximum pouch weight is 16kg first
pouch, 2nd pouch must not weigh more than 16kg, 3rd pouch 12kg, 4th pouch 10kg, 5th
pouch 10kg and 6th pouch 8kg. However, the Max Pouch weights must be reduced if walking
up slopes greater than 1 in 12 to 8kg and reduced to a Max of 5kg if walking up slopes greater
than 1 in 8 or the delivery walk is one that predominantly goes up and down stairs etc. For
young people under 18 the maximum weight of a pouch must not exceed 10kg. Cycles
can only carry one pouch of 16kg max. Cycle panniers can only carry 8kg max each side.
REMEMBER: Follow the pouch weighing procedures and only carry one pouch at a time.
*Note: Some Areas have introduced an alternative, simplified Pouch Weight
arrangement as follows: The maximum pouch weight is 16kg first pouch and the
maximum weight of all following pouches must not weigh more than 11kg and such
arrangements can continue with the same monitored and adequate controls to avoid
excess weight being carried). REMEMBER/IMPORTANT: All weights are ‘Maximum Weights’
not ‘Target Weights’. Additionally, individual capability may also need to be considered
in certain cases when carrying out a Walk Risk Assessment.

We had the reducing weight matrix for a while and it was very difficult to enforce. The main problem was that the distance between pouch drops were spaced quite evenly around the deliveries. If you had 7 or 8 bags you usually needed to make up 10 bags, which meant more time on delivery dead walking (this was during job and finish), and loads of staff were skipping the weighing so we reverted to the alternative, 16kg for first bag(or first 2 bags if using a trolley), then all other bags 11kg MAX. People must remember that it is not only yourself that lifts these bags, think of your driver!

Is the 5kg bag for stairs just a recommendation by the Union or is agreed with RM?

The reason i ask is i only see posters with recommended weights from the CWU, never RM.

I am sure it has been agreed but like so meny agreements cast a side in the winds of change and not for the good of the workers!.

its in one of royal mails safety manuals i seen it years ago when i insisted id only carry the 5kg in an area that was predominantly steps.

Unless things have changed, the weight of your bag should include your waterproof coat.
