CLIMATE CHANGE

'The CWU and the Environment
Raising Awareness'

13 - 17 July 2009
The CWU Education and Training Centre at Alvescot Lodge

The CWU Education and Training Department is running the union's first course aimed at raising awareness and increasing our organisation and activity around the Environment.

This course is open to all CWU reps who are interested in sustainable solutions to climate change and environmental issues in the workplace and in society.

We are particularly interested in attracting a wide cross section of activists for this course and would welcome applications from youth officers, retired members, health and safety reps, union learning reps and women and ethnic minorities who are often under represented on CWU courses.

We are also deeply honoured that Tony Benn will be formally opening the new wing of Alvescot Lodge on the final day of the course. All those in attendance at this course will be able to attend what promises to be a fantastic opening ceremony.

This course attracts PAID RELEASE FOR health and safety reps and we are currently in discussion with employers regarding release for other reps. An update will follow.

As with all CWU Education and Training Courses, all applications require the signature of the relevant Branch Secretary.

I enclose a course outline which sets out the subject matter that will be covered over the week and an application form.

I take it then Mr W you dont belive the CWU and indeed the TUC and the wider TU movement should be involved in Enviromental issues?

If you don't that's fair enough but how about you give some good old fashioned intelligent reasoning for your view point?

I am just so happy that the CWU has the time and resources to spend on such important issues, because the mundane tasks of ballots, pensions, pay increases, tribunals and modernisation agreements must have been concluded to the satisfaction of the membership

I certainly hope they haven't the gall to ask for an increase in subs because they should actually be looking to CUT costs and not increase them by introducing totally unrelated issues to communication workers, their workplace and conditions.

Just as a matter of disinterest, how does the CWU expect to change environmental issues and influence the government of the day and indeed the whole of the industrial world?

TBH I'd prefer the CWU to concentrate all their efforts on their members interests not on their on pet interests, I know that environmental issues affect us all but it's hard to care about them whenever you could lose your job over a small infraction (or because a manager doesn't like you).

I just wonder if the pamphlets were printed from sustainable resources and the subscribers to the pamphlet didn't use laptops using electricity, which of course brings in to question hot house gases produced from nuclear reactors, the laptops of course produce heat and use precious metals and in some cases toxic metals, how environmentally more friendly therefore would it have been to not bother producing the pamphlet in the first place.

Then of course there will be all the hot air produced discussing the problem and then the unthinkable noxious and flammable gases produced after a few pints followed by a particularly hot chicken curry, having to clean up the messes in shop doorways, not to mention getting rid of the waste ................... I should have persuaded you by now that it is a fruitless exercise left well alone and of course cheaper.

Aah but do pints mean money for the CWU, the bar at alvescot is a souce of income and I would presume a small profit is made from the bar and invested in education and training or other worthwhile activties.

Is there such a thing as an "environmental" rep or a usual rep who has attended a course on the environment - let's be honest it's another junket to justify Alvescot with yet another pointless exercise in claptrap to impress the impressionable - why not just send us all a pamphlet on the environment and lets all make our mind up, that's if we bother to read it.

I know from concrete experience the CWU, at my branch level at least, is ineffective and not as transparent as it should be.

I have also had the misfortune of experiencing the ineptitude (or was it deliberate?) behaviour of senior union officials....I was left to hang out to dry, but prevailed in the end....

I now am going to pursue a career representing the ordinary man and woman in the street at employment tribunals...something again that the CWU nearly always goes missing from or balls up...this is based on my very hard earned experience of being a union rep for 3 years....

If any of you out there are turned down for an ET by the CWU, please come to me for a second opinion.....

I need to earn a living, but I ain't going to rip you off and can really say whether you have a chance or not...

The CWU is just not up to the task of looking after us. It takes our money year on year and goes missing when the s**t hits the fan.

All the CWU should be bothered about is terms and conditions...something it is, frankly, pathetic on...

Why not just make it a week long course to train reps to fairly, and without bias, represent all those who pay Union Dues? Surely, even the most ardent Union Reps can see a very high number of the rank and file feel completely let down by this Union.Funny how this can all be arranged at the drop of a hat, and most offices are still waiting for their ballot papers.

Why not use the money to have a CWU "Have your say" - where the common man & woman of course states quite clearly what we expect and more to the point what we don't want.

This course has been in the planning for well over 6 months, it was listed in the course schedule for 2009 which was published last year.

What is wrong with wanting a debate around the issue of whether or not the CWU should see the enviroment as one its issues? The CWU powers that be are clearly going down this route so I would have thought brining this to attention of this site and having mbrs of this site putting forward solid coherent arguments as to why the Enviroment is not a trade union issue or is a TU issue would be a good thing. Forgive my ignorance but I thought the mods and the site owner wanted high quality debates on this site, obvisouly you know something i dont.


The CWU is not the only union going down this route and some such as the PCS are well and truly already there!!!!

It could be said this is a debate for all trade union members, especially as the TUC is into the enviroment agenda.
