training cancelled

A month ago I was on a two week training course,in a different town from where I work, on one the days I travelled there and the trainer called in sick.
I shouldn't have been working normally that day so I went shopping for a while. At four in the afternoon I got a message saying can I go into work. I rang in
to say I had only just got this message. Could anyone tell me if I should have got paid part of the day for this? Thanks.

Did you contact your unit to say the course was cancelled.

I didn't because the trainer said he was, which he did.
