hasstled on delivery

Post by guvenor »

was asked by person on street if i could get his giro for him.
replied no you will need to wait till i get to door and all other usual replies .this went on for 1 1/2 hrs following me round del
you all know scenario .so i tell him to back off or i will report him ?
nxt day informed line mangr and dom of my complaint
result of this was i would need to deal with situation myself and report incident to police in own time
said it was outwith their control
surely they have a care of duty to their staff ?
what is proper procedure for mgmt and myself on this type of incident
nb. i felt threatened as there was more than one person with involved person

1 . you should off walked away (gone back to the office or rang the manager )
2. report it to the rep they have to suspend delivering the mail to that addresss
3. put a grievence form in against the manager for not looking after you

guvenor plainly put your DOM is being very economical with the truth - and it is clearly not outwith of their control, As you have correctly identified they do indeed owe a duty of care to their staff. I can only suggest that the next time you see your DOM you ask him or her to read or re-read as the case may be the Royal Mail: Confidential Streetwise Presentation or the talkabout:walk safe:wtl discussion guide. In which the first section covers your personal security out on delivery, and the second half looks at how you can help to protect the mail.

Part of the advice given:
If you think you are being followed, walk quickly across the road, crossing again if necessary. Walk immediately to a busier area where you know that there will be other people. Know the safe areas of your delivery. Then call for assistance from either the Delivery Office or the Police. (IMHO That puts pay to his or her porkies).

Our people have the right to expect to be able to go about their work without the fear of assault or the threat of intimidation.

Other thing within your DOMs control:
There are a number of things they (DOMs) can do to protect our people, most of this depends on a walk risk assessment and a detailed walk threat assessment if appropriate. They can call in the help of Corporate Security. There are a number of solutions and, in the final analysis we (Royal Mail) could withdraw the service. The most effective way is for someone to pursue cases with the help of the Police (point in DOMs favour) and (Royal Mail) will support any individual with this.

And have a nice chat with your friendly CWU Safety Rep (Unit, Workplace or Area).
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

Agreed ,the sensible thing to do would have been to abandon delivery. Clearly the individual was behaving abnormally ,this was potentially a very dangerous situation. Are you qualified to predict or trained and supported to deal with what may have been his next move? Your safety is paramount
