The above picture looks like our DOM on saturday when he can't cover duties. Ever thought about joining Romec, mind you the way things are going, we'll probably have to clean our DO's ourselves. Maybe we could hoover a 16th of the floor each? Any other ideas?

So you would have refused a "reasonable request", and risked it becoming a disciplinary matter then?
He'd already explained to the DOM, that he was cleaning up the mess. Then 5 minutes later, the DOM returned, to usher him back onto the sorting. If he'd refused to go, he would have been refusing a "reasonable request". Or hadn't you noticed that part?

If you MUST riticise people. At least TRY to get your facts strait.

If we are going to get technical then it wouldn't have taken me over 5 minutes to tidy up a few bits of hole punch confetti

Also I was referring to him checking the PAT test on the vacuum cleaner, I know I will be told its health and safety yadda yadda but seriously, only a union guy could make such a big deal out of a bit of paperwork.

I know I will get flamed but the union is getting on my threepenny bits at the moment.

Razor you are rite i am a typical union man as im sick and tired of the treatment we all now recieve from the DIMS .If the hoover had the test sticker on it i would have gladly hoovered up my mess which in fact was not a little bit of paper confetti but a lot.Once i noticed no sticker to say it had been passed and was safe to use i went and asked for a broom and pan .Its not my fault R/M are to tight to have a broom and pan in ever office across the country. But if you expected me to get electrocuted well think again as i value my life a great deal. And if that meant i was being akward and being a typical union man so be it. Would you push a york with only three wheels on it or carry a satchel with no strap and before you say it yes it is the same i am just using different examples for arguments sake. Royal Mail should provide the correct equipment with the correct safety stickers on if they want you to use electrical equipment but on this occasion they didnt...................

I've been there myself prior to privatization , one bent company ar**hole thought he was being clever with such equipment from a " refurb " company to supposedly save money , refurbished ? - it should have been in a ' kin museum or on a " reality " tv programme .

RM would have happily thrown the rule book at someone if it suited them

It's also worth noting, that if he'd have used the Vacum Cleaner, without the Test Sticker, and been hurt. He could potentially have been held responsible, for not checking it.

There's a reason that these electrical checks are required. Not everyone looks after equipment provided at work, as well as they do their own. Wiring deteriorates if it's wound too tightly (when putting away), used to pull the equipment (in this case a Hoover), and over time, if it's particularly old. That's why they need to be checked regularly, and your own Vacum Cleaner at Home, doesn't. Although I still think it's wise to check them from time to time (although not as often as work equipment), just to be safe. But that's just my opinion, not H&S Rules.
