undercover boss
anybody watch the channel4 programme Undercover Boss? I did and i reccomend that RM bosses watch it too, after working with the staff for 10 days in various jobs one of the directors came to the startling conclusion that if you give your staff respect more of a say and a decent wage you get happy, loyal and contented staff ffs what a genuis i would have never thought of that and the best bit of all was that someone had the idea of less managers and giving the staff more responsibility and using the savings from this to up the workers wages, fuc**ng brilliant thats what we have been saying for years

Re: undercover boss
About 8 months ago we had a member of Office Staff (don't know what grade he was, but must have been fairly high up by the way the lines were fussing around him) go out on a van with a driver, and he said he didn't realise the amount of indoor work we did, he was under the impression we came in collected our work and went out on delivery.
Thats the problem we have too many manager who have no idea of what a Postie does, not like the old days when they started as a postman and worked they're way up, now they come from Uni without a clue about the service we provide and think they know it all.

Perhaps the guy was an operations graduate, or from another unit...nothing wrong with getting familiar with the job he probably came straight out of uni and this is his first proper job.westlondonpostie wrote:About 8 months ago we had a member of Office Staff (don't know what grade he was, but must have been fairly high up by the way the lines were fussing around him) go out on a van with a driver, and he said he didn't realise the amount of indoor work we did, he was under the impression we came in collected our work and went out on delivery.

There's still plenty of room for posties to work their way up. My lino kept asking me if I wanted to do it I was only 22 at the time I told her politely to go do one lol, not worth the hassle especially at that age and experience!

Re: undercover boss
Hi Trojan
long time no see. Most of our reps have gone over to the darkside and then leave RM. I don't think our present rep will, saying that he don't have much to say on any issue
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet

Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Re: undercover boss
Many managers do not know how to motivate their staff, they need experience in different management techinques and management strategies the lack of these skills just leads to incompetence.

Re: undercover boss
Royal Mail management = orders from idiots on high + ignorance and oppression - targets achieved (or not) by psychological bullying.
IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!
The service is poor, the staff are utterly demoralised, not 'onside', and go on strike, top bods get bonuses. Royal Mail is the best example of how NOT to run a business.

Too many ops managers were riding a red bike one week, then "managers" the next. That's why the RM mantra "we've always done it like this" is used as the standard reason or excuse when anything is questioned, because most know no different.
That's why the culture of the bully seems so prevalent on the ops side; the management grades seem to have neither the wit, intelligence or training to try to do anything different.

Not always the case, some are graduates and have simply no clue of the workplace. They are so detached from the realities of class room procedures and a full on working environment.
CUT OFF!!!

So that could be the reason for being ineffectual, but I don't see the connection as to why they should then be over-bearing.

Re: undercover boss
Over compensation. They realise they are ineffectual and that they don't have the respect of those they are in charge of so they compensate by trying to lay the law down and become autocratic.Tman wrote:So that could be the reason for being ineffectual, but I don't see the connection as to why they should then be over-bearing.

Re: undercover boss
Some posties that have become managers are inexperienced as well as some of those that have come from university. What makes me laugh nothing is being done. If the incompetence was sorted out, I truely believe that RM could survive being part privatised. Managers that were posties for at least 15 years are quite competent, its the ones that have been posties for a short period that find it difficult to manage.Phantom wrote:Tman wrote:[Very true.

Re: undercover boss
If you've really got the ability to be a good manager it's unlikely that you will have spent much of your working life as a postman.
If you're a wet behind the ears graduate fresh out of university you'll have no experience of the work environment so most likely won't be able to manage properly.
So, what's the answer ?
