Taking mail back to DO

I'm a little unsure where I stand regarding cutting off and taking mail back to the office. Most days I try to do my hours but when you get put on a new walk it's hard to know how long you will be. Most days I am 30-60 minutes over and I don't want to be.Am I aloud to take it back to the office without getting into bother for it.

Go into the office before you leave and ask for a hand back form, this allows you to leave mail in the office without taking it out. Just make sure you take enough out to furfill your contracted hours (they will probably watch you). If you take it all out you will be leaving yourself open to wilfull delay (if you bring mail back) which is a sackable offence.
They might try and get you to stream the mail when out on your duty but again go for the above option unless the manager gives you in writing, permission to bring mail back. See your local rep.

forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by stream the mail. I have already been watched when cutting off. Just luck I didn't finish before my time as I don't know all the ins and outs yet.

They get you to deliver only first class mail and maybe second class if time allows, you bring back mailsort.

Well my DOM just tells people to take it home and deliver it on the way in the next morning!! Nothing wrong with that now is there? Just leave the house a bit earlier to give you time to deliver your previous days cut off and then just head into work. Customers will see that R M are getting good at doing 2 deliveries a day again!!

In our DO you are allowed to bring back mail as long as you have previously informed the manager. As soon as you are aware that you are going to go over, even if out on delivery we are unwilling or unable to go over our time , we contact the manager by phone and follow his instructions.

As with most things different offices do the same thing in different ways. I would check with any of the more vocal or militant colleagues as no doubt they will no the local customs.

its all in the conduct code(go to downloads)every morning i go into my manager and either say i MIGHT not be able to complete today or i WONT be able to complete,you should then disscuss with manger the best coarse of action.AND THEY SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN in the daily volume record for you to read BEFORE you go out.
I didnt read,im being taken down the conduct code for not bringing the correct mail back ie deliver exactly as its laid out in the frame

No mate. It is not a wind up. This did happen and even 2 official customer complaints where lodged and the dom in the office just never dealt with it or gave the customer the written explanation or anything!!!!

And the thing is that DOM is still employed!!!! Is this what Royal Mail wants???? Dishonest DOM's??????? Never mind the postie!! You always hear if a postie has been dishonest but never a DOM!!!! Yea!!!! Makes me wonder!!!Rant over.

Simply advise you manager before u leave that u don't think you have time to complete the delivery. Simple as that. Follow his/her instructions if they are reasonable i.e. bring back what you can't deliver/leave in bag-drop/take out what you can manage.

If u are told to take out what you will have time for you are agreeing to do just that so can't bring any back therefore don't take too much. If yhou are unsure take a bit less than you think u can do or offer to bring back what you can't manage.

If u are told you must deliver it go to see your union rep and/or advise manager they are trying to make you do compulsory over-time which is an illegal action. Don't get worked up about it stay calm and relaxed. Your manager has probablly tried to talk people into doing too much for half his/her career, they are experts at it so stand your ground, do a fair days work for a fair days pay.

How bizarre if this is the case report your dim to the I-B as this is a no no, surely doms rnt this dim to give an instruction like this but then again they are dim doms

Good post. I'd just add, don't use the term 'cutting off' as it can be used against you to accuse you of being reactionary and threatening. So use plain language - and don't forget to have fun out there!

You are right disgruntle, but I would still love to see that DOM go down!! How to you report to IB? even tho I have left now those customer complaints were never dealt with at all!! Yet they are going round trying to sack people in that office for leaving van doors open !!!
