Summer Absorption!

Post by banner18 »

Just started summer absorption in our office. Did the absorption and then didnt get back to the office until well after 9 oclock, picked up my walk and didn't get out until nearly 10 oclock. Couldn't then finish in time. Has RM gone crazy or something? There are some serious rights being violated here, the rules surrounding bringing mail back should be changed so that we can finish on time and bring what we can't complete on time back. They want complete efficiency of their workforce but still need to fulfill a service obligation which can now only be done by exploiting the workers in this kind of manner.

Do your own duty and if you have time whenever you come back to the office then you can do the lapsing but only if you have the time.

It is all very well saying that but more and more offices are now being told to take out the extra first. Obviously while you are doing that, your bags are getting dropped off. For some that means standing up to management and their bullying ways and cutting off but to others it means working past your time and getting no ot. In our office we dont have that problem yet but by reading in the forums this seems to be happening a lot and it needs strong union rep in these offices, even if it means sending the area rep to a different office each week to sort it out.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

After refusing to take it on my first day the second day I took it at the end after my duty and the third all hell let loose when I refused and was threatend with conduct code. When I take it I have to take it at the start nowand the peron taking me out drops me off then takes someone else out to there duty while i complete then wait for there return to take me to my duty which is 3-4 miles away. I am expected to do all that and my own duty and still be done on time regardless of the level of post etc.. otherwise i'm to slow. they are supposed to be walk testing me this week but on Monday not one word was said to me in the office. Bring it on I say i have nothing to hide and keep telling them that they can call me a liar as much as they want or threaten to conduct me for wilful delay as they se fit but at the end of the day I do the job right therefore they will have to break the rules themselves to get one over on me!

At the end of the day i'll have a stand up arguement every shift if thats what it takes to get it in there heads that I will do OT on docket when it suits me not them (subject to them paying me of course which is another bone or contention - I always get my OT but nearly every week in two years I have to complain and its added the following week. They just keep trying it on as there are others who don't claim.

At the end of the day it does not matter what our contract say regards flexibility and ot if we don't want to or can't thats there problem as they can not forse it upon us.

Of course you should be tested the P and M agreement states quite clearly

sensible options to absorb absences, and increased workload, where time exists within normal hours

We are not required to assume that this time exists within your normal hours but that you have regularly proven by your actions that it exists.
You, me, everybody works as directed so if they want me to take out this extra first, so what, i may fail my own work, this is their problem not mine.
diarise everything, the business refuses to listen so don't tell them you can't complete the worload just bring it back and say "i did tell you"

If you are doing your job correctly then why worry, if you feel you are being singled out then make sure you are not alone, it's not difficult.
Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP

We start at 6:15 prep for 15 mins then sort...and sort .... and sort. Till office is clear. Sometime 8am sometime 8:30. We are not allowed to leave the office till the missorts are done and all works are prepped. We dont leave till 10am at the earliest. The walks which are absorbed are usually the same ones. The walk is split into 8 and only takes 15/25mins or so deliver. Then it's onto own round. (I do it that way so I know exactly what Ive got left to do)
We've been told we cant come back for it, and we must take it out, and that we should be grateful to have a full time job in todays climate.

Fortunately or unfortunately my absorbtion is the walk right next to my own.

Fortunately because I only have to cross a road and Im there so I can naturally absorb it without any travel time or doing it before I do my own.

Unfortunately because if I dont play this right I could well be lumbered with it after week 22.

Having said that the boss has promised to bring a few p/ts in to cover boxing in meaning the primary should be sorted quicker, plus he says we can go when we like and not wait for missort run.

had a proposal at our office today about absorbing a walk for the "light summer period".
seems the Dom want the walk absorbed by the whole office which will equate to each postie taking between 8 and 12 delivery points each.....this is seen by management as a good idea as the walk is right outside the office with the furthest point being no more than 5 or 6 minutes away by bike
our union rep also sees no problem with it as on monday even after taking our meal relief we were standing around for about half an hour waiting for the misssorts to come in
we will wait and see if it works or not

of course this is one of the reasons the union wanted the use of cars to end.

An important thing to note to those who dont yet have summer absorption, be careful about how you do your duties now, a lot of people still like to work at a very fast pace to make time. The managers DO notice what time people finish, youll probably have questions to answer if you cant help out in the absorption if youre making time now.

Just cut off and if you have to bring the mail back then this is done in RM time and NOT yours!
