spoke to some staff members today who reckons that, when the Machines comes in that can break your walk down to streets, the drive to make us part time will begin, many staff members are of the opinion that they can't afford to go down to part time and will refuse to do so, they will probably try to bribe you with extra money to buy down your hours, cut staff through redundancies and double the size of your walk less staff but still full time or impose it anyway and prepare for a long strike.

the future don't look to rosy right now, I'm looking at a timescale of 3 years to implement, the Managers seems to forget that they will also be in the firing line with reduced hours and less staff, there is less need for supervisors.

to the floor what you guys think ?

If you are in the north west of England we are the trial area as such as 5 mail centers will be closed and super delivery offices are being made!. So good luck you will need it just as us.

the machines will decimate the ammount of indoor work , i'm full time & have been for 19 years but i dread to think what the future holds for us full timers

Its already happening! Up here in fife, kirkcaldy was the first test sites for introducing the walk sequenced machines. They have probably slashed 10-15mins off your time on a frame so indoor work is being cut. Been in the RM for a decade now, and back an the old days when i started their were more full-timers than part. This is not the case any more, instead its quite the opposite as indoor work is declining.

Over the years colleagues have left the business and walks have been reduced from 40 to 22.5hrs. This is a common practice throughout all offices just to do one thing, and one thing only, save money. More than ever i have seen that DOMS are getting their arses kicked if they let hours go out the door, keeping to a budget is their main priorty within the job and they do not care if your out their till T time as long as the job is getting done. Sometimes DOMS think that all the work can be done within the hours you do, but sometimes they have to look at the bigger picture and realise that everything is not what it seems.

The only "bigger picture" they see is their bonus at the end of the quarter for keeping the budget to a minimum.

Yes thats one of the main reasons they want to keep hours to a min...just to look after their bonus and not the employees

At the end of the day this has to happen and RM has to get more automated otherwise it will die a slow death. The new kit will still need 'operators'.

Do the machines do as royalmail say they do?
HOW MANY JOB'S WIL GO?
And is MTFS applying to all jobs lost?
And is this team working through the back door?

Yes to machines that make it more efficient and that help provide a better service. However even sequencing machines will not reduce dependency on manual labour even indoors and they are more likely to increase manual labour outside.

The indoor work won't be reduced except by a fall in volume as even with sequencing machines you still have to put it into the frame to MERGE (thats what that means ) with the packets and flats. It may save time when measured against the same amount of mail on the current system but it wont save on manual labour as you will do the same amount of work just a bit faster.

Yep agree with this but at the moment RM are cutting hours and bringing in new ways of working before the new machines are in place. So being Mother Shipton I can read the future with some confidence, more cuts, longer walks and more industrial unrest when they are finally working.
