Sun Cream

Post by jafferpants »

Manager was asked at team brief why we are not given sun cream. Answer--" Because some people might be allergic to it" So there you have it. The chance of a few people getting an itch is far more important than skin cancer. The real truth of course as we all know is they are too f***ing tight to pay for it. :cool

No. Daft as it sounds, I've come across this type of thing before.

I used to be a First Aider. And there are certain items, which aren't included in the First Aid Box anymore, for exactly the same reason. They're so scared of having to pay out, if someone has a reaction. That just about anything that could cause a reaction, gets removed! For example: If someone is stung by a Bee you can't use antihistamine cream. The only treatment (other than removing the stinger, if still present) that can be given, is to take the patient to A+E if there's a bad reaction to the sting.

So bearing that in mind. I'm not at all surprised, that they're refusing to give you Suncream. What amazes me though. Is that you're far more likley to get sunburned, than suffer a reaction to the Suncream. And quite apart from the pain sunburn causes. It also increases the risk of Melanoma in the future. :hmmmm They just don't think these things through, do they? :arrrghhh

Andy mate, it's nothing to do with 'an allergic reaction' but to do with spending money, you'd think it came out of the managers own pocket.

I've just gone and bought some Factor 30 out of Morrisons for £2.98, hopefully it'll do the job. RM should be supplying us with it though!!

Working outdoors

Outdoor workers are at risk of skin cancer

Workers in the UK spend different amounts of time outdoors. This page is written for people who spend some or all of their working day outside.

If you work indoors then you still need to think about sun protection during your lunch break over the summer months. The SunSmart messages will help with this.
Why do outdoor workers need sun protection?

If you work outdoors then your skin is regularly exposed to the damaging effects of the sun.

In fact, outdoor workers receive on average 3 to 4 times more UV exposure each year than people who work indoors. This means that fair-skinned outdoor workers are at greater risk of skin cancer unless they take steps to protect themselves.
Employers' legal obligations

Employers have a legal duty to protect the health and safety of their employees according to the:

* Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)
* Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999)

There is information about employers' legal obligations on the Health and Safety Executive website.
Being SunSmart in the workplace

Cancer Research UK has produced a SunSmart Strategies for the Workplace factsheet for employers and employees. The factsheet stresses the importance of sun protection and skin cancer early detection.

It also includes suggestions for how employers can:

* make provisions for workers to avoid unnecessary midday sun exposure
* encourage workers to cover up
* consider providing sunscreen
* keep their workers informed.

Tips for protecting yourself

Over the summer months employees can take charge of their health by following these tips.

Shade:

* Seek shade where possible between 11 and 3 :hmmmm
* Spend your breaks out of the sun

Covering up:

* Choose a protective hat that shades your face, neck, ears and head
* Talk to your employer about including a hat in your uniform
* Wear sunglasses where possible to protect your eyes

Sunscreen:

* Apply factor 15+ sunscreen before you start work and reapply regularly
* Use a sunscreen for sports or with a low oil content if you are doing strenuous activity

If you do get sunburnt regularly tell your employer and discuss what improvements could be made.

As if I'd trust suncream supplied to us by RM!!! It'd probably be made of lead and asbestos, to keep costs down...

I remember a few years back a DIM in our building going upto the local tesco and buying a case of bottled water for his postmen when it was hot. he done it a couple of times infact and out of his own pocket which I thought was very decent of him. Obviously someone higher up saw this as a sign of weakness as he was emptied not long after this and nasty management originated rumours started about him going mad etc.
I am a postman and I kept the faith and I kept voting, not for new labour but for the working man.

It causes a lot more than Melanoma and also it can take up to 20 or 30 years for sun damaged skin to appear,so god forbid you suffer skin cancer later on in life,it could have been our jobs that caused it.A friend of mine who served in Aden in the 60,s was diagnosed with Skin cancer recently and got some compensation from the veterans agency

We have sun cream....

Unfortunately, I'm one of those fair skinned people who burns very easily even with factor 30 on and they only have factor 15 at the office which obviously we can't take out with us as there's only the one bottle. I'm going to have to get some factor 50 for work over the summer.
