Need time off (or to finish early)

I need time of for a hospital appointment next week and have been told that the only slot they have is up until 2pm.

It takes me about 40 minutes to get to the hospital and I have to go home to get showered and changed beforehand.

Basically, I need to finish around 12.30 at the latest. Given the fact that I'm usually over by around an hour on a Friday, I'm slightly concerned.

Any advice appreciated for how I should approach my DM about this......

i would go in and say i need ot be at the hospital for X time
then i would ask them how they want to handle it
do you want me in early and go out early
only take part of my walk out or what?
tend to put the onus on them

This happened to me at the begining of the year. When i approached my DIM with my appointment card i thought i would get the day off.
I was wrong ! Apparently they don't have to give you the day off, it's down to their discretion.
So he swapped my rest day instead ! Never mind, i needed the appointment, so i reluctantly used up my rest day ....

In our office its good at the moment if you show the hospital letter you can go early after you have prepped your walk and taken say half out if you have time. Depends on your DOM though in the past ive had to swap a days holiday.

It really depends on the managers descretion. Despite mine being hardwork at the best of times they have aways been fair when I had appointments. At the time I was on a duty with a van and just broke off then continued afterwards taking van with me and reducing timeout of duty when booking shift times.

You do not automatically get a days special leave paid, you also have the option of taking a days annual leave or a day special leave unpaid. You could also try and swap your rest day but you wont know until you ask your manager.

Yes, but a little bit of common sense is all that's needed, which is usually not very forthcoming

Or you could swap your day off for the day of your appointment.
I've just done that for next week.

now then dom i assume your from the dark side ? your comments aren't quite true special leave for hospital appointments is there to be used
i dare say others in your office have gleaned it ? so if you dom does not give it to you i'd go up to the next rung and scream out favoritism loudly as no doubt's with the previous answer this is self evident and seems like a practise carried out by less than up front managers

Lets be honest, p*ss takers have f*cked this up for everyone.
If you have an appointment you either need it or you don't.You will either go or you won't.
What is your concern whether you are allowed to go or if you get paid ?

Not anymore Axeman. I've had the same problem myself. It's purely down to the Manager, whether you get Special Leave or not. If you don't get the time off. The other option (they have to allow you time to go to your appointment), is to change your rest day. Or if you work in an MC, RDC, etc.. Change Shifts for the day.

That's what I had to do the last time I had to go to an appointment. I had to go from a Late Shift, to an Early Shift (14:00 finish), and back to a Late Shift. Because the Manager wouldn't allow me to have the day off.

I thought that they could only ask you to swap rest day for appointment day and that it's up to you weather you want this are not. They could also either try and get you to come in for the start or the end of the shift, if time allows. Appointments are given on a merit rating and it's up to your DOM weather you get the whole day or part of it. Fight all the way or you will get nothing.

It seems to depend on the Manager making the decision - and I believe that
it may depend on your attendance record, some have had no problem getting time off for
a hospital appointment, while I know others have had to take time out of AL or been told
they have to make the time up.
