Accident at work with no pay?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a recent accident I had. I was put on a new walk, blind, and sprained my ankle while crossing the road. It looks like I'll be off for 3 days, at least. My Dom has told me I will not be paid as the accident arose from my negligence. I was looking at a bunch of letters, trying to find an address and went down a pothole. I have been here for 9 months and not a member of the union. The gist of the letter I received was that my accident related absence could not be discounted from the absence procedure. As a result of of his investigation I cannot be considered free from personal responsibility surrounding the accident and should be aware that this will not be discounted from the warning triggered under the royal mail attendance procedure. Any light that can be shed on this would be greatly appreciated

I thought that you had to be with RM a year before you got sick pay but irregardless of that you're still entitled to SSP.

Any particular reason why after nine months of working for Royal Mail and probably having seen first hand what goes on behind closed doors in the business you are still not a member of the CWU?

In order to qualify for SSP your absence needs to be 4 days or more and you won't get it for the first 3 days. It about £75 a week.

Probably just lucky in as much as it hasn't truly reared it's head for me (the real bad parts, that is). Had a few sticky moments but nothing that hasn't been resolved satisfactorily.

Report it to the Social as a Industrial Accident , also report it to the HSE & Council Environmental Health , log everything when , where , who etc , get everything photocopied . If you let RM close ranks and twist everything round , they'll do it .

Get a grievance raised , otherwise RM will maintain that you had no problem with the warning .

Unfair Detriment for raising valid H&S concerns is a punishable offence in an Industrial Tribunal . RM have traditionally regarded themselves as above the law and their senior management operate at the very edge of employment law at best , putting very perverse interpretations on matters . RM have been monitored by the Health & Safety Executive since 2004 , if they can deflect blame onto staff and teach people a lesson for giving them a problem they've no inclination of dealing with & massage the figures , though there is the occasional professional claimer coming the old soldier ; they'll try it on .

At the end of the day , that sort of DUM would have sold his arse in Woolworth's window for a tenner and shopped his mates for the price of a pint ; :lfo intended them to be his mouthpieces . Welcome to RM , for all the union's shortcomings , you need them as insurance against this sort of p*** poor management .

RM would be ten times worse without the CWU .

Thanks for the replies, went back after 3 days on light duties. Ankle healing nicely and hope to be out on a walk by the end of the week, albeit a slow one.

You should have learnt two lessons from this ;
(1) Do the job properly, don't be negligent by "looking at a bunch of letters ... while crossing the road" etc., and
(2) Join the CWU.

roads are full of pot holes from shoddy repairs after the Utility companies have dug them up but RM will try it on . Give them nowt , stick to the rulebook - which works both ways
