I didn't get credited a day off in lieu on my annual leave for 1st January....
manager says it's last years leave and too late to do anything about it now.....
Is this true? Can I get my day off back? Can I put in a grievence?

If it is the 1st january this year then it should be added on your leave automatically in the bank holiday credits section. If it isn't then you should inform your union rep of the situation who should then advise you what to do about it.
If it was 1st january 2008 then it is down to the manager to make sure he/she informs you that you have leave outstanding and if you do not take it before end of tax year then you may lose it.

You can carry up to 5 daYS in to the next year.
