9% Letter Volumes Fall Further 9%
Front page of the Courier. 9% fall over two years. Thats not a lot is it? OK Its a lot of money, but filtered down to the postman on the street, thats nine letters less for every hundred he delivers. Barely noticable. If you deliver 1000 letters a day, and there was a 9% drop in one day, not spread over two years, thats 90 letters less. Yet we are hearing of walks being split between four other walks, So you lose 90 letters but gain 250, quarter of another walk.
If volumes are falling then Royal Mail needs to look at ways of making up the lost money, but NOT making the postmans job harder. A 9% drop wouldn't have you finishing more than a couple of minutes earlier, would it?

Re: 9% Letter Volumes Fall Further 9%
Mail hasn't fallen, even with the new accounting practices from RM my office is recording an increase of about 15% over 2 years ago (and around 35% since SDD), so I'd like to know where the mail is dropping.

Re: 9% Letter Volumes Fall Further 9%
I suspect that RM are not lying as such, just being selective with the figures.
For example, if our competitors now collect say 10% of all business mail and shove it through RM as DSA, would it be factually accurate to state that 'mail volumes have fallen' ? In terms of mail collected and sorted by Royal Mail, that statement would then be true. But in overall terms, delivery staff would still be delivering the SAME volume of mail as before, the difference being some of it was not collected by RM. So that wording could give a false impression, so as to promote the 'we can't afford a pay rise' argument.
I don't know if the overall mail market is shrinking, or whether it is merely RM's share of it that is falling. It could be both of those things. I do know that there has been strong growth in packets (Amazon, Play.com etc etc), but we hear little about that, so taking that into consideration, I have my doubts that TOTAL posted traffic has fallen by 9%.
But RM have never misinformed us before to try to hold pay down, have they ?

Re: 9% Letter Volumes Fall Further 9%
• 3rd Quarter revenue of £2.6 billion compared to £2.5 billion last year
• All four businesses in profit for first time in almost 20 years
• On track to achieving quality of service targets
• Modernisation programme on track to deliver
• Year-to-date profit of £255 million compared to £162 million for the whole of 2007-08
• On course to deliver full year profits of nearly double 2007-08 performance

A summary from RM site and the most important figure you have to look at is revenue, plus you have to remember that that DSA is increasing so that should be bringing the figures down (along with the falling volumes) not up.

Whether the mail is up or down is irrelevant to the workforce-what matters is how many letters are now sorted/delivered per worker compared to when volumes were soaring 5-10 years ago.

Re: 9% Letter Volumes Fall Further 9%
Exactly tomangoe,
Mail volumes may be down but when managers increase the walk by a higher percentage we end up doing more work for less pay. So it doesn't really mean s**t to us.
Why doesn't the scourier have a massive headline saying PACKETS UP 50%? This worthless propaganda rag should be abolished. Save RM a few bob as well as very few people I know believe the lies inside.
They are just buttering you all up for privatisation. Don't let em ;)

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

I know its only minor but the graphic used to show the figures on the front page of the courier is way off. If you went off that then it looks like mail is down 50%.

Re: 9% Letter Volumes Fall Further 9%
All I really want to know is 'If mail volumes are falling the why aren't revenues dropping by the same amount?' maybe one of the managers could let me know (failing that one of the apologists).

Re: 9% Letter Volumes Fall Further 9%
As said before MAIL isn't falling, on the front of the courier it doesn't anything about DSA mail which is basically old MAILSORT so the volume of the mail is in the system and whether some of it or none of it processed by a mail centre, a delivery office has to deal with it all and therefore no change whatsoever for delivery staff. RM have said mail volumes are falling for the last 3 to 4 years and it is simply a stick to beat the staff with to force through changes to working patterns and to cut hours, managers have no problem with this agenda cos is all performance/bonus related to them. BUT the biggest problem is that mail isn't falling and thats why we are in a mess cos the new working conditions don't match the mail volume. Simples!
CUT OFF!!!
