Parking at work

Post by carpathia_kuja »

I've been at my DO nearly 2 years now and we have always been allowed to park wor cars in the yard (in a way that is not disrupting the vans in any fashion) .
Ever since last week we have been told no one is allowed to park in the yard for safety. It's stupid cos no one has got hurt not once in the yard as far as I am aware, and it's the fact that we park in secure spaces and out the way of the vans for easy access. Parking has always been an issue to start with at my DO if you could'nt get a space in the yard, but now it's chaos trying to get a space outside the yard. Too many cars and very little space, we've had to resort to parking all the way up against a side wall which disrupts the general public getting up and down in their cars, and some of us have to park on the grass all the way round the back of the building and on busy days its a right work out going back and forth with all them heavy bags. Getting a sore back even before setting out for delivery. Most of us use our cars for work cos the drivers take far too long to deliver them and in most cases the turns have not enough bag boxes. I know that safety is important but there was no need for this to happen, pretty much the lads n lasses agree with what I've said cos we've been worked up about it all week. That's my rant for today lol.

What part of "Don't use your own car" do people not understand? It is RM's problem to get your bags out to you and to provide enough drop boxes. What will happen if your car is broken into? Will the manager say "Sure he has been using his car to help RM out" Not likely you will be blamed for anything that is stolen. Also have you told your insurance company that you use your car for work not just getting to and from work? If not and you have an accident you will not be covered and what will the loss of your car mean to you and your family? Everyone in your office should stop using your cars it is upto the manager to sort out the logistics of the deliveries not yours. He is paid to manage, let him (I know many managers have problems with managing lol) you are paid to deliver letters stop being helpful to RM they do not appreciate it. Also I hope you are not taking out overweight bags again if you injure yourself through carrying overweight bags all you will get is a shrug of the managers shoulders and a warning if you are off sick with it.

:Applause :Applause :Applause I thank ya! and couldn't have put it any better myself :Applause :Applause :Applause And I wonder just how many bags of mail are being transported in private cars whilst out on delivery? I'm betting it is more than one :wave

carpathia_kuja probably still works in an office where their all still making a bit of time, but at a massive hidden cost (theirs). In our area they banned private car use years ago,so the tear arses(about 75% of the office, but falling) dont have the option to use them :Very Happy

No parking allowed in our yard unless your a manager and then its ok. I am not going to rip your head off about it but you should start thinking about not using your car.

I understand what you are saying like about not using my car. My insurance knows about it and I had to take my documents in to be photocopied by the gaffa not too long ago. In the past when I used to send my bags out they were always late and whenever I complained about it I got alot of bs fed to me about the "universal agreement" and all that larky. I know I really should'nt be helping them out by taking my bags but at my DO it's pointless complaining cos nothing ever gets done. All I was ranting on about was the change to not being allowed to park in the yard anymore, it's all fairplay I guess if we're not the only ones who are'nt allowed, and we got no option when it's busy to overload wor bags cos again nothing ever gets done to help us.

I don't know anything about the geography of your office so I'll just say this, try public transport or riding a bike to work (or you could park in a free public carpark near to the office and ride a bike on in) and that way you'll not have to worry about the DOM making up things as he goes along and it'll put the onus on the DOM to arrange for your bags to be brought out when you need them. It'll be a win-win situation for you.

:nana Yes, the same old chestnut---the Unions keep telling us what we should be doing, but will not fight to make that possible!!! At the very least, there should be an agreement drawn up, that states folks should be taken out within x amount of time after prepping up, and should have to wait no longer than ten minutes for their drop bags
I do noy use my car.and have had nightmare waits for drop bags etc.

Simple thing to say to you, chum - if RM expect you to work to your time, and work to the duties they want you to do ( summer lapsing, etc ), and everything else they want, so they can squeeze the maximum amount of work out of you and your colleagues, then it's about time you get to squeeze the maximum amount out of RM - get your manager to ensure there are enough vans to get you all out to your deliveries, and that there are enough vans to get your bags out to you, and if that can't be done in a timely fashion, no matter how many bags have to go out, either collect the docket, or cut off......if it means that more vans have to be got & more driving duties created, that proves too much has been taken out for the job to be done by RMs own guidelines - guidelines that are put in place to either protect you or sack you.

So, you and your colleagues have to ask yourselves, if a car is broken into or stolen, if you are injured on duty when not wearing PPE or not having correctly weighted bags, or if you are returning to your DO tired and sore with missorts in your pouch, and you leave them there overnight - what do you think a manager will do when he learns of these transgressions, after getting pressure to slash costs & get rid of hours? Slap your wrist and tell you to go back to your prep? Put you on a Stage? Or go all out for dismissal and replace you with a part timer on less hours?

You may think I'm spinning a yarn, but no one cutting corners are safe - even strike breakers from 07 found themselves out on their ear when managers needed to make numbers fit - if it comes down to your job or the manager's job ( or even the manager's bonus for some of them ) there's no contest......the only safe way is to know the guldelines, and follow them religiously ( and by God, it is so satisfying when a manager asks why you didn't do such and such and you say "I couldn't do it within my duty time because I am doing the job properly!" )

Finally, I along with many of my colleagues have to use my car to get to work...but like many of them ( not all ) I don't use it to get to my delivery ( I do enjoy seeing the managers flap if it's heavy and I'm the last one out ). The guidelines, or rulles or whatever they are, are there to protect RM, and they protect you - if you follow them!
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

i can almost guaruntee you that your insurance company does not cover you, i do not know any insurance company which allows you to carry mail in your car, you MAY have taken out BUSINESS USE, which will state on policy that the vehicle is only allowed to be used for social, domestic, commuting and business use, this in fact does not cover carrying mail, as there usually is an exclusion i the small print about the vehicle being used to carry mail or be used for multi drops (and i have to say i have never seen a policy which does not included that exclusion in some form or other) RoyalMail do hold their own policy and that MAY cover you, but i would really advise you to get a copy of that policy to find out what you are covered for i.e excesses/third party liability
