Four day week and ten hour shifts

Post by dunposting »

Four day week and ten hour shifts
This an "option" being tabled in our office. Is this allowed? Surely this is wrong. I for one am not working until 3pm on Saturday.
Unsocialable hours rule comes to mind, as they used that to put us on later starts.

I would definitely go for 4 x 10 in a five day week, monday to friday and drop the saturday deliveries with a volunteer or rota staff doing special deliveries. That way we would save the rotation staffs jobs and increase the business efficiency whilst being able to plan our time off better. And just think of all the 3 day bank holiday weekends .

Yes mate it is allowed weve been doing it at our office for almost 3 years and most of us i believe like it.
Under pay and mod section 2 delivering change and flexibility there were a set of enablers which included innovative duty structures this would give offices where possible the chance to move to 9 day fortnights,4 day weeks etc.
I understand your concerns about a late finish on Saturdays but the way to look at it is if you rotate your rest days then every 3rd week you will get a long weekend, which means you will finish thursday and not come back to work untill the following Wednesday, very nice imho. Then the following week you will have Wednesday-Thursday off, which breaks that week up nicely, then before you know it its long weekend again :nana So yes it is a long day but think about this as well
5 day week 3.5 hour delivery=17.5 hours
4 day week 3.5 hour delivery=14.5 hours
You may want to work a rest day on docket as well which if on S/A cant be far off £90,and you still get a day off :Very Happy
So get your rep and all the members to have a good look at this proposal as believe me its not as bad as people think. Its better to work 4 days a week then 5 imho and have more quality time away from the workplace :Very Happy

A 10 hour shift would include a much longer delivery, it was mentioned in my office but they wanted 6 hours on delivery which most people thought was too much (RMs 6 hours would be 7 hours in the real world).

hi jonnyp

We have the four day week in the office in the past year and it works well, with the chance to commit yourself to a four, five or six day week.
I will say that some of those on the six day regret it as it means no rest days unless they get a cover from another collegue on a rest day.
i currently do a five day and by having the alternate rest day it works well so i currently have one day off and work the other on s/a.
by the way our rep had to do all the work on this as our dom could not even work out the annual leave, now we are being told another load of cuts are on the way and the dom is asking the rep for his assistance.
I am afraid it is a big NO as he has already said no deal on the table.

I will use my office set up as an example
We have 30 walks
4 firms/bag drops/packets/all special deliverys
1 canteen/missort/packets/bag drops/all special deliverys
2 phgs
15 Rest Day covers
9 reserves
For every 2 duties you need a rest day cover,so 30 walks would need 15 rest day covers.
But we also have 14- 9 hour S/A slots, which means 7 duties have no rest day cover and the S/A is rotated every 3 months.
What we done at our place was the last seven duties without a rest day cover would be the S/A.We agreed that it would be on the walks as every one is a postie and only a select few can drive or perform phg work.
We have a rotating rest day,not fixed so that for example this week my rest days are Fri-Sat,next week it is Mon-Tues,the week after it is Wed-Thurs.This gives you a long week end(5 days)every 3 weeks.
Reserves unfortunately dont get long weekends like duty holders and rest day covers, unless they pick up a duty on 2 weeks A/L and sign for that, they still get 2 days off though could be Wed-Thurs or Fri-Sat depends what the days off are.
Times of attendance are 05.30-15.30 Mon -Sat.
If you want to work a day on S/A and your walk has no rest day cover then you end up doing your own walk on docket,if you do have a rest day cover then you have to pick up another walk instead which is not the end of the world as its docket at the end of the day.The question you need to ask is do you have a set up with just all dutys and no S/A which is more full time jobs,or can you get an agreement as we did which gives you earnings as well without no one being left with out a job. What is your total cor work hours to run your unit a week which i guess is on a 5 day week, and what would it cost to run it on a 4 day week?If you can give management savings and get a 4 day week then go for it.

BUT remember it is national policy not to agree any savings at the moment untill we get a national agreement which covers all functions.

cheers 4 the quick reply johnnyp thats definately food 4 thought. no savings in our office at the mo. but some1 retired and they r not actively recruiting suprise suprise. so thought this could be a way of using those hours instead of the absorption they r trying it on with at the mo. :cry

If all of your walks are based on 3.5 hour delivery span what other work do you perform to make your hours up?

I do like the sound of this though, my office is on the 5 weeks on, 1 week off rota which is good but yours sounds even better.

Good question, none we still have job and finish as we did not agree to phase 3 covering out door work :Very Happy
But we clear all our work everyday,no one cuts off,all our d2ds are done by every walk every week and our quality of service is above area targets :Very Happy
