20 hour a week contract

I am on a 20 hour a week contract and have been in the job a few months now.
Any round I cover is thrown in for me but I am still in the office for up to an hour doing redirections bundling up etc so even with the best will in the world and even on the lightest day I am always exceeding my 4 hours.
However I have noticed that people on 30 hour contracts appear to do exactly the same job as me so I just wanted to know if this is the same in your offices or are the 30 hour men given other duties to do?
Is there a set job description for each length of contract?
No problem at the moment as I claim o/t for any additional time but still appear to be getting less for doing the same job as someone on more hours.

if so and your going over every day i would approach the manager with a mind to going 30 hours

better for you to be 30 hours all the time

I'm on a 30 hour contract and we have to throw the entire walk in and believe me its impossible to do cos it gives you about 1.5 hours to throw it in, do packets,missorts, re-directions, kill offs,tie up and weigh your bags. then half hour break, 15 minutes traveling time then 3.5 hours walk 15 minutes to get back to the office with any DIB's and we're suppose to do all that in 6 hours :lfo :cfo :mfo oh and I forgot somehow prep your door to dustbins in that time as well

better for you to be 30 hours all the time

Royalmail love 20 hours over 30 even if the 20 hour postman works 30 on overtime, they only pay 20 hours on sick, holiday, bonus and pension and the postman works the 30 at royalmails beck and call so why would they make them up to 30.

That is something that should be covered in the weekly resource meeting - any duties which require consistent daily overtime should automatically be reviewed to an increase in hours.

What's a resource meeting Would that be the same as the DOM tells the union rep what's happening next week (usually takes less than 10 seconds).

Exactly the same for me...except I'm on a 25hr contract! It's impossible to do 25 hrs. If I start and finish on time, it's 28 hrs.

I should have known what to expect after my first day, when I was given my start and finish times and they didn't add up to 25 hrs.

Yes, its the same in my office. Those on 30 hr contracts do 30 hrs, those on 25hr contracts do 30 hrs...and claim overtime. So it;s the same hours, same job, same pay...less holidays and other benefits.

I feel sorry for those being recruited now, because the contracted hours and those actually worked bear no relation, and yet it continues to happen. I feel sure that many accept the part time contracts in the hope of full time work and I just wonder how many ask about that likelihood and what the interviewing officer answers.

I was led to believe part time was just to start with. I was told that I was replacing a postman who had been made full time after one year, so naturally thought I'd be full time after a year. It's been a year and a half now, and there is NO CHANCE as far as I can see. There are part timers who've been there 3 or 4 years or more, scratching around around for extra hours, doing collections etc. The only answer I can see is to do some training in the spare time I've got, and get a proper job...but I'm too damned knackered.

I was on 30 hr for a while after a transfer ( but it was easier to accept for me because i knew what i was going to when i accepted transfer ) Now back on 40 luckily, but when i was on 30, i was mostly covering FT rurals so didnt have a problem getting the extra hours most weeks. Still had that bad feeling of being skanked when on annual leave etc though.

I was originally on a 25hr contract when I started in nov 2007 but recently got a 32.5hr contract, I did originally ask at the interview stage if there would be any chance of an increase in hours anytime in the future and was told there was no chance of this happening...but 18 months later here I am on 32.5hrs...think about 9 got made up in our office.

Let's be honest, R/M have always lied about the job in one way or another---you find that out on day one,I remember
when I started 15 years ago, on a part time basis, I was told 5-9 HaHa. like most new starts you take a lot longer in your first few weeks. They should make it clear from the start that you are likely to go over your hours.
