How easy, quick and most importantly likely is it to get a transfer to a chosen office (or one as near to it as possible!) ?

Its quite straight forward, See your DIM and get a transfer form which contains a lot of info & contact nos etc.

You can put down up to 5 offices, there are different people who look after incoming transfers to various parts of country, and they will usually give you an idea of how many people are on waiting list for a particular office.

You have to put down how many hours contract you want, I put 30 to 40, as i was told on the grapevine that if i put 40 it could take ages to get an offer ( i was on 40hr when applied for transfer )

Personally, i knew which part of country i wanted to go to, and put down the 5 nearest offices to that, took about 6 months from when i first filled in form to getting a suitable offer, i did have another offer a couple of weeks before, but while the location was fine, i didnt fancy the working hours, think it was 11 am - 5 pm or similar.

Obviously if you want to go to an especially popular part of the country you could be on the waiting list a long time...

If you check the Royal Mail website (jobs) you will see there are no vacancies in that area. Therefore your best course of action will be to contact the DOMs direct asking if any have a vacancy. Royal Mail recruiting won't do anything because there aren't any vacancies. Just a reminder you have to be at your current office for at least a year before you can transfer.

Isin't there something about stage warnings too, eg. not being on any warning before transfering.

It depends whether there's a vacancy at the office you want to go to. When I was querying a transfer I could've gone within a couple of days...

Yes, if you are on a stage or conduct code, you wont be able to transfer.

I was contacted directly at home by the (then) DIM of one of the offices on my list. Officially i think they are supposed to liase with the transfer department, but it seems that corners are cut sometimes.. Nothing stopping you contacting offices that you are interested in and having a chat with DIM/lino there.

Also once the transfer is agreed, your original office can only keep you for so many days after the "transfer date" for operational reasons etc. I had to do 2 more weeks than initially envisaged at my old office, bit of a pain at the time, but in the big scheme of things not really significant.

I went through online yellow pages to get adresses/contact nos of delivery offices, there is probably an official list somewhere on the RM intranet, but i couldnt access this from home, and anyway it was easy enough to find out myself.

The thing on the intranet is called DOBI. You can search by office or postal area.

TN ( Tonbridge ) also covers most or all of East Sussex. You could also consider DA ( Dartford ) which goes into SE London, or BR ( Bromley ), more SE London, as well as ME ( Medway ) or CT ( Cantebury ) - it depends how far you can / want to travel, the roads are pretty good ( with A2, M2, A20, M20 & loads of good roads to drive on - except if granny in front of you is doing 30mph )

We have had several posties join us on transfers at our office & they all turn out to be useless!! usually start ok then all of a sudden off they disappear... long term sick or in a couple of cases have been caught thieving after a while i'm sure the DIMS in their old offices must be laughing their tits off when they got shut of these wasters.

PS i'm sure we've just been unlucky & not all transferees are wasters

One of the lineo's was handing out preference forms today asking if anyone wanted a transfer,don't think he got many takers. They want to move up to 34 people out of the office, bit strange really as we've about 9 off sick this week and this morning we had 5 casuals turn up to prep and managers asking if we want docket on Saturday, apparently its called Flexing Up

With Mail Centres the current target for rationalisation why would you want to move. Its a harder job in deliveries (physically) but at least you have a fair chance of the DO staying put unless its a SPDO or a tiny one.

Would probably depend which MC you wanted to transfer to.
Most MCs are seeing FT staff reductions, and some are to be closed.
You might be more likely to get a transfer into a MC if you accepted
a PT job, and in MCs they are usually in the evening between around
1700-2200.
