Executive action hits London

Post by Martin Walsh »

Royal Mail annouce today that they intend to take executive action at EC delieveries today starting with a resign next week and then the introduction of the revison without agreement within the next 3 to 4 weeks. The number of jobs they are taking out is 55 AWDs.

The National Union are already in the process of balloting London already over the abolgation of National Agreements and in pursance of a national agreement.

All London reps are meeting the members in all units to get a big yes vote . This is not only a London Dispute neither is it just a scottish dispute this is a national dispute and whilst we cannot wait for everyone to come on board surely its time some of the country got off its knees and started to campain to get a yes vote and a national agreement which sercues our futures over the next decade or so.

It really does annoy me when people come on here and talk about having votes on 4 days on and 4 days off which is a revison and achieves savings and also increases the span. Why are they having a vote on the proposals the only vote they should have is an industrial action ballot to get a national agreement as them agreeing a 4 hour 45 min span stiches all of us up.

It sickens and dishearthens all those who are willing to strike to get a national agreement surely its time that some people grew a backbone and realise that our terms and conditons have been gained by fighting and not by melting.

You should be addressing your remarks to the CWU HQ Leadership not haranguing the ordinary members of the union who would follow the lead of a national campaign but reluctant to follow an independent campaign.

Hundreds and hundreds of offices have had executive action foisted on them in the last two years NOT two weeks, this isn't a new situation - it might be for you - and the support that the CWU should have been giving to its members long ago has been non existent.

You deserve every credit for making a stand but not every area has access to 14000 members in close proximity - I hope it goes well and most of all I hope you get the support you deserve.

I think thats part of the problem weetrogg HQ arent confident that they would return a YES vote on a national ballot, and as you said in your post a lot of our activists felt let down with HQ's decision and if you dont have the activists fighting for a YES vote then that weakens the Unions chances even more.

Dvbuk When its right to blame Headquaters then I am first in the que but I got to say that sometimes Divisonal reps , Branch secreataries, Regional secreataries , Area Reps and Local reps have to show leadership as well thats what why they are elected and thats why those positons have been agreed.

Why is it that some areas have held the line on savings in the main Scotland , London and Anglia whereas others have broken the Nationally agreed policy which was told to all CWU branch`s not just once at a national briefing but twice , Divisonal reps are meant to have policed the policy along with area reps etc. Headquaters also sent out a LTB instructing branch`s not to agree any savings until such time we have a national agreement.

Its too easy to put all the blame on Headquaters but a lot of the blame is down to branchs and reps who have not kept to the policy. Remember it is not headquaters who have agreed 4 hours 45 mins spans it is local and area reps.

In additon how is it that scotland and London can manage to get the members on board for striking to defend the whole membership whilst others cant.

Yes I do believe that CWU Hqs needs to do more to moblise the workforce against Royal Mails plans and to do it quick. But quite frankly those who put all the blame on Headquaters do not have a clue what really is going on. Why is it that some offices in Manchester have agreed to 4 hours 30 mins spans despite them having a PEC member and a divisonal rep in their branch is that also the thought of CWU HQs.

Personally I aint in the blame game and know that I will be doing everything within my power to ensure that London achieves a massive yes vote for strike action in order to achieve a national agreement which covers everyone.

I lets others sit on the fence and blame everything and everyone but is it not time we all took a carefull look at ourselves and asked this question ? ASK NOT WHAT YOUR UNION CAN DO FOR YOU BUT SAY WHAT CAN I DO FOR THE UNION. It is s**t or bust time you need to decide if your office is prepared to sit on the sidelines or whether it will help us win.

Your choice !!

That's true, but you have to ask yourself when the rot set in? We have fewer union members in our office than we had when the strikes occurred in 2007, there is now a mistrust over what many felt was a betrayal and I have to be honest and say there would be some serious doubt if this office could muster a yes vote on industrial action. We have something like 40% part timers most of whom haven't joined the union and are more concerned in trying to make a living wage on short term contracts. Many union supporters have retired and those that are left are certainly in the minority.

Personally I think that 2007 was the turning point in union affairs.

I agree with this, if london can organise, there is nothing to stop our elected reps getting together to organise locally, i have long seen a lack of structural leadership in reps, local and divisional.

In this day and age, a one or 2 day strike in dundee or perth means nothing, as the dums can easily shift the mail to other smaller working offices.
I honestly believe the only way to get the business talking is an all out strike, indefinate, until they crack.

You have to admire the french, no messing, no half measures and NO COMPROMISE.
This is the unions biggets and last battle i think, lose this one and its the end.

ICH BIN EIN BERLINER! slow :Applause :Applause :Applause

Maybe we would have an idea who to blame if HQ was a little better at communicating. However I am in the blame game when I am paying for representation not obfuscation. Are we too insignificant to recognise the big picture?

I have not seen a single item on savings from anyone - other than this forum and I have to say it is a bit thick to start whingeing now it is in your back yard, when in the main we have had this since 2007.

Dvbuk you wont find me moaning i believe that if you talk the talk you have to walk the walk thats why we up for the row and thats why we have not really been effected by pay and mod becuase we believe in sticking together.

So I dont know what branch your from but the last LTB asked for branch`s to give the wildest possible circulation of that letter obviously your branch didt or is that another thing you can blame CWU HQs for.

When those of us who are fighting on your behalf achieve a national agreement I hope you dont moan too much about it as you wont have done a thing to assist in getting it.

Good Luck to London ,hopefully some good will come out of it.
But rank and file members in general feel the National Union sold them down the river in 2007 and continues to do so.
As for blame,THe lines between senoir RM managers and Senior CWU are Blured.
In my expirence,RM never have any national problems, they are always local issues ,and and blame to be laid will be to a local Manager, obviously CWU follows the same leadership.

Some local reps do a great job under difficult circumstances, and its not the most popular JOB IS IT?
Top cwu Leaders ,should lead from the top and lead by example, not be about as good as a dead sheep,RM must love our CWU leaders.

Patronizing Approach . Take a second and, check out the posting history of our recent advocates of 4days on 4 days off change. John Wayne once was asked what his politics were, he replied, "a little to the right of general De Gaulle.
Is it getting more clear?
