Absorption Question

Can anyone tell me if absorption should be taken out with you? A number of my colleagues are being threatened with the conduct code when they tell the managers that they wont take it out with them and that if time permits they will do it when they return to the office. Some of the managers are now driving round in their cars and dropping it out to posties even when they have been told there isn't enough time, and we now have people being threatened with wilful delay or are being pushed into doing overtime that they don't want to do. We have spoken to our local rep, branch and area rep, but its still happening.

As far as i was aware under the new agreement, you take any absorped walks out with you if you have time to do so after your own delivery. Anyone with any sense will not be rushing round to get back early and having to do extra work.

The outdoor work should only be done if it can be done within the current delivery span - the trouble is nobody, including reps, pays any attention to it. Many in my office are ready to go on delivery 30/40 minutes prior to the 10.10 deadline and are made to hang around - if these people were allowed to go out earlier they would be able to do the lapsed outdoor work BUT it would increase the delivery span and there is no way we should be allowing that - park and loop has already broken the 3.5 delivery span and the union seem to be of the opinion that increasing the delivery span is the answer to maintaining full time hours - of course they aren't the ones delivering.

I think the biggest problem is the fact that the walk you are having to absorb is often miles away from your own delivery. Managers are unreasonably expecting you to absorb just for the sake of absorbing.

When you finish your walk, just say that you will return to your office for a toilet break, and that if you have time you will pick it up there and(if it's miles away) you will expect traveling(bus fare) or transport to your first point of delivery.

We are supposed to do the lapsed stuff before we start delivering regular duty. Personally, if i am prepared to go over time and book OT that day, i do lapsed stuff on way back to office after regular duty done, as it makes more sense geographically.

However if i am going to cut off, then i do the lapsed bit first, and bring back some of regular duty.

So we are penalising rural customers over town customers, but hey, i am only following orders.....

Under pay and Mod agreement you should do absorbtion before your own duty, but you have to be taken out and brought back if need be, then do your own dely. If your own dely is going to go over then any absorbing of walks should not happen and Dim is responsible for covering usually on o/t, but usually by hassling some-one else to do it.
No-one can be forced to do o/t and no manager can do anyone for wilfull delay as long as you do not finish before your time on your own dely, which should take you 3.30hrs ok
