Unofficial Redirections

Something I've been wondering about, what is RMs official position with the mail correctly delivered where the householder writes a redirection address on the envelope. Lets say her son is at university and when she gets a letter she redirects to the Uni address by writing on the envelope. At my office they bounce around a bit often coming back to me and I keep posting them and eventually they disappear. Do Royal Mail agree to deliver these unofficial redirections or are they dropping hints that I should speak to the customer and get them to set up a paid redirection.

There were some stickers knocking about at my office a few months ago - we were sposed to put them on the unofficial redirections.... something about the Government/Home office whatever, recommending people use RM official redirection service when moving house, to prevent identity fraud etc. Aint seem them for a while though, i guess no one bothered to re-order when we ran out.

If someone writes on a envelope the new address then I think we have to deliver them but it's only for domestic customers not businesses (that's what I've been told but I'm not sure if it's official policy).

We have loads of these stickers,they live in the admin office and no one else seems to know or care what they are.

yeah that's what we were told, but what gets me is why should they get away with paying the redirection fee

Word from management is ,"If they ain't paid for it ,they won't get it" No unofficial Redi's ,Business/ private,opened/unopened. So it's back to the original address for kill offs scribbled felted or stickered it's back in the loop till deaded Two words spring to mind .Log Jam

I just kill em off, no proper re-direction no delivery. Simple!

We are obliged to deliver them if the customer just writes a forwarding address on the front without opening the item (obviously unless it's a DNR).

If it's going to a business then it will be surcharged if we forward it as requested.

I think that it's actually part of the licence but obviously we try to encourage people taking the redirection service...

You are right! We are obliged to redeliver unopened letters to the forwarding address BUT it is not a carte blanch redirection and can only be done once.

Right on my arse, that's tantamount to theft, you are effectively taking money from your employer in order to profit by that decision.
