Bringing back mail
Can some one please tell me what our position is regarding bringing back mail at the end of my shift. The manager says if you take mail out you have to deliver it even if you are over your time. Question is can I take it back to the office at my finishing time or will I be charged with willfull delay etc. Is there something written down on the subject? HELP PLEASE

Re: Bringing back mail
You're not supposed to bring back any mail so the best thing to do is to not take it out in the first place
Just leave it to them to sort out.

Re: Bringing back mail
In our office it's a slightly different ball game. Very one sided. We are NOT allowed to bring back mail if we take it out. However we are allowed to leave mail before we go out on delivery. If we do choose to do this then we have to fill out a form explaining why, what were leaving, what time we'll be finished etc etc. Very demoralising! If we were to go out and do the full duty and it took us an hours overtime there would be no questions asked because it saves the manager any hassle in getting the hand back covered! Double standards, eh? My question is though, if we leave mail before we go out on delivery and are finished 20 mins before our finish time we could be charged with wilful delay for not taking out enough mail to make it last till our finish time. However on the other hand if we take all the mail out and know we are going be over our finish time we have been told in no uncertain terms that we have to deliver this mail as we have took it out for delivery and can not bring it back!

Inform the manager you will/cannot complete in the time allowed it is his decision which action to take and make sure you have a witness better still all round on him/her at the same time!.

Re: Bringing back mail
We take everything out with us at my DO, but if we know we arn't going to complete we tell them before we go out and then it is up to them if they want us to cut off or pay OT. Never have bags left at office before we go out

How long does it take to fill out the form?Sci_Dog wrote:In our office it's a slightly different ball game. Very one sided. We are NOT allowed to bring back mail if we take it out. And to answer YOUR question ,How do you manage to finish 20 mins early if you've cut off

Re: Bringing back mail
As I'm a floater covering 5 different duties each week it is very hard for me to guess exactly how much mail to take out for each duty, each day to last me until my official finish time. My point being I don't actually cut off. I have to leave the mail in the office BEFORE I go out on delivery. If I take too much out I'm expected to deliver it regardless and if I don't take enough out and finish before my official finish time my manager has informed me that I could be charged with wilful delay. Pegaus really and truly has failed in our office. The form we are expected to fill out asking why we are leaving a hand back takes anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes to fill out. Depends on how cheeky and smart you want to make your answers.BELIAL wrote:How long does it take to fill out the form?Sci_Dog wrote:In our office it's a slightly different ball game. Very one sided. Re: Bringing back mail
See your problem . I suggest you err on the side of caution ,since you are not a machine then take only what you THINK you can complete. If your Dom thinks you can do more ,and is wrong ,then it is his problem. By all means let him get the walk tested

However surely it has to illegal if nothing else, if I take out too much work out and then as my official finish time approaches and I know then I'm going to be 15 mins over my finish time surely they can not make you work anything above your contracted hours? Regardless of whether you have took the mail out with you or left it in the office before you started. Maybe I'm being petty but some of us have plans and things to do straight after work and need finished at exactly our contracted finishing time. Not 15 mins after it.

Re: Bringing back mail
Our office works on the, if you believe you will not be able to complete you must inform your manager at the earliest time possible it then is down to you and your manager to come to some agreement as to what area you can not take, just recent we have been told that we must not take mail out to bring it back but here's the crunch if you and your manager have come to some agreement and you still have problems when out then you have to ring the office to inform the manager that is on duty that you are going to bring mail back,we have come to the conclusion that the management are hoping that it will cause you much more of a problem so you will get fed up and stay out to do the job or that you will take all the mail in the first place hoping your get tired with the inform the manager come to some agreement senario and do the delivery with o/t causing them less of a problem!

Re: Bringing back mail
this has always been a bug bear.If you believe that you will not finish then you have to (as far as i've been made aware) inform a supervisor, who then paces, scratch there heads and paces some more, the reply would nearly always be the same take it out and see how you get on. The out come is always the same for me protraction

Though on a serious note - you do not tell the manager what you are leaving in - you ask him what you should leave in - if it is too much, you bring it back, if it is too little and you finish early ......- then they are both problems for the manager - never offer yourself open to discipline - if you do as he/she says what can you be critised for?
