getting seniority back???

After working for Royal Fail for 6 years i due to personal reasons was transferring to a delivery office in the north of England.
Somewhere between the 2 HR departments part of my paperwork went missing and the transfer fell through even though i had already moved so i was forced to leave......17 months later after immediately reapplying to join the business i got a job in my local D.O .subsequently i have moved back down to London to my original office and have been informed that if i have my original pay number i can reclaim the seniority i lost as somebody else who left after me got theres back although this person was only gone 9 months.
This would be a godsend in my office as i would move into the top 20 of seniority rather than the mid 40's i am at the moment.....just seems no one can actually clarify this as i am also being told its not the seniority i can get back but my length of service
Not having any joy with my union rep as we dont get on from when i was at my DO before

You being serious? your telling me that you had to leave Royal Mail 'cos the HR departments cocked up and lost your paperwork? That seems scandalous surely?? What did you do in the 17 months in-between?

Was under the impression that if you leave the business then restart you lose seniority. You can still aggregate both services for holiday entitlement though. Yours does sound a bit different though to a normal leave and restart situation.

I was in a similiar position...I did 12 years and then left for 8 months(I went back home to Finland as my pa was ill)so left the business as I thought I wouldn`t be coming back to the UK nevermind RM,but then returned and got taken back on at RM only part time though at the same office
I was never told I could have taken a career break.
I was told I would have to start a fresh..so I had to go back to delivering to all the sinkholes again ..that was in 2000 I never got my seniority back,the only part that I did keep was my pension...they aggregate the two spells together,so thats probably why they want your old pay number.

What i did in the meantime was take the first job i could get.....was a security guard on minimum wage but at least it fed the family

They never linked my old pension to my new one when I returned, my old one is frozen, don't know if thats good or bad now and I get 2 pension letters everytime they send something out, one with Miss the other with Ms, thats probably what has confused them
Oh and I did'nt get my seniority back either.

i moved to wales as my mum had cancer and went ot look after her
i could not get a transfer so i left got a job then applied a year later i lost seniority and as far as i know my previos pension is seperate.
i was told no jobs available for a transfer..but the person who delivered to my house was taken on after i asked for a transfer and i was told they were on a short casual contract.......funny they are now senior to me

It would be worth checking the union site - but I think there was a scheme whereby you could claim seniority back BUT it had to be within 6 months if memory serves me right.

defanetly BAD! Final salary scheme,What was your (final) salary the first time you left? What will it be when you actually leave?
even worse if you left under POSSS and returned under POPS. Didn't leave and re-join around 1987 did you?

Pretty sure internal transfers can be done now, and on the careers website too. This is what the big man himself told me!
