tax code wrong

Post by opgpat »

I've been refused a deferment on my student loan repayments becasue the student loan company say I'm on a tax code which is for people with more than one job. God this job is bad enough without having a second.

I'm on 'BR CUM' and have been for 2years looks like. Anyone know if that means I've been paying too much/little tax? On a 30hr contract.
What a farce.

Correct. Normal tax code should be four numbers followed by a letter e.g. my own code is 0615L.
BR is basic rate and is normally used when an employer doesn't have your correct code, normally used when somebody is a new entrant and hasn't produced a P45 or equivalent. The good news though is that if you've been on that code for two years you've probably overpaid tax as you won't have received your personnal allowance (basic rate takes the basic rate tax on all your earnings). Bad news is that HM Revenue & Customs take forever to deal with claims

Thanks for the replies, I'm now planning a trip to the local tax office on my day off. The only reason I can see for this is that I was left on the bank staff at my previous job but never did any work for them and thought I was taken off their bank ages ago. Hope this doesn't mean I can't claim back lost tax. Looking at pay slip and calculating the Basic Rate looks like I've been down 20quid or so each week for THREE YEARS. Bollocks. :cfo

I had a similar situation when I joined last Autumn and was on a BR code for quite a while. I called the tax office and was told it was because the P45 I gave RM when I joined hadn't been received by them! I have to send in my P45s and P60 when received and it will get sorted out.

Can anyone tell me how quickly RM are to send out the years P60 at the end of the tax year?

BR CUM stands for Basic Rate Cummulative, it is for second employments, on my second employment that is my tax code on my wage slip, as one of the other posters stated it should be something like 0615L for your main employment, bassically if you have only been getting paid by Royalmail and your tax has been deducted at BR CUM which is 22% on every penny then you have lost out on your personal allowance, which is currently about £6035 depending on your individual tax code you have been paying 22% tax on your allowance which amounts to about £1300 per year over paid, get all you p60s for the past few years and get down the tax office, there is quite a few quid in it for you, can claim up to the last 6 years depending on how long it has been affecting your wages,

personally as i have 2 sources of income i registered for self assessment which takes about an hour once a year to do online and then i can see staright away if i have over paid

I had exactly the same thing happen to me. I suddenly realised after nearly 4 years in the job that my Tax code was wrong. had to get copies of my P60's ( from payroll) and then send them to the Tax office, got a cheque about 3 weeks later for nearly 3K. Whilst the money was nice, it's annoying that RM cause the problem in the first place by not forwarding the P45 you give them in the first place.
