Holiday entitlement

Don't know if anyone can shed any light for me.......I do a 40hour week, used to be on a day off rota, but changed to Wallington around July/August (RM's decision, not mine!) I used to get 5 weeks and about 3 days, but now I've been told I get 3 weeks and 5 days and I can't seem to get an explanation, other than that "it's because your Wallington now", but how does it work out? I will ask my manager, but wondered if anyone on here could explain it first.

A duty system where you work 6 days and are paid for 5 - the 6th day being used to take a week off every 6 weeks.

As to holiday entitlement not 100% sure but it sounds about right. There are a few Wallys on here so I am sure one will confirm when they see the thread, or correct me if I am wrong.

I am wondering about fewer days off as well.

Maybe it is because you have extra week off in this year than previous year. (possible)

As far as I am aware when you start in the business you start of with 4 weeks 3.5 days which increases the longer you stay in the business ( up to a maximum of 6 weeks), check with your local union rep or Royal Mail advice line 08456060603. You can also purchase extra weeks up to a maximum of 6 weeks ( including your basic entittlement ), you get the forms from your managers.This does not cost that much, ( less than a tenner a week deducted from your payslip so you dont really miss it ). You stay in this scheme until you opt out of it.

Now if I remember what I was told it goes something like this - because we work 6 days but only get paid for 5, when we are paid holiday we get paid for 6, so for 4 weeks holiday you lose 4 days of your holiday entitlement.

Maybe I'm overlooking something glaringly obvious in my calculations, but it would seem to me you are getting shafted on your holiday entitlement

POSTMAN A, who does a 'normal' 5-day duty, in a normal six-week spell, works 6 lots of 5 days, and is paid for 30 days work.
POSTMAN B, on a 'Wally' pattern, works 5 lots of 6 days, and is also paid for 30 days work, if I understand correctly.

POSTMAN A got 2 days off every week, making 12 rest days in that six-week spell.
POSTMAN B had one rest day on each of weeks 1-5, then had a full 7 days off on week six, also making 12 rest days in 6 weeks.

Both have worked the same number of days.
Both have had the same number of rest days.
Both have had the same amount of Basic Pay, presumably.

Why is Postman B somehow entitled to less holiday ?

He gets the same number of days leave. But because he works a 6 day week, taking a week off uses 6 days leave. Whereas Postman A only needs to use 5 days leave to get a week off with the 6th day being his rest day. Both postman have the same number of days leave but those working a 6 day week will have fewer weeks leave because their weeks are a day longer.

How does that explain the original posted question?

5 weeks 3 days = 28 days leave (for 5day week, 5days off in a week*5weeks + 3)
3 weeks 5 days = 23 days leave (for 6day week, 6days off in a week*3weeks + 5)

How come there's a difference - is there something about this Wally system that means you get less (I have no knowledge of it so don't know)?

Just to add another spanner in the works, can someone explain why i lost aweeks holiday with this system.I worked four weeks 6 day weeks, then went sick for 2 weeks,which led into my week off. When i went back 2 work they said i would not get my rotation week back.I find this strang as i am being put on file for being sick also losing holiday,I might aswell been sick for one week then had my leave,its such agrey area nobody seems to know if they can take your entitlement or not
