Some in our delivery office (after being given incorrect figures initially) have accepted revised deals and will finish in June. Some are still awating correct figures. The procedure is moving very very slowly to the frustration of those awaiting an offer.

Im 45 I have another 20 years to work in RM ,at 19000-20000 per year I stand to earn 380K-400K ,would I give that up for 30K? we all have a lot of pondering to do ,it is a hard choice,esp if you have a job to start on the Monday after finishing with 30K in the hip pocket.
Then again jobs are hard to come by in these times, but one thing I do know,I wont be agitating for EVR just to get out and watching former colleagues delivering for 4.5 hours.

Get the impression that the over 55's weren't originally offered what was in the 2007 deal as RM attempted to save money by conning people. Nowt new there eh??

Having got it correctly, some are happy to take it.

Who can blame them? If we thought we were bullied and treated unreasonably now, it will only get worse unless the CWU wins some landmark cases.The writing is on the wall.

I am to get my offer of VR next week. I am in my forties and should get £30k and the decision is do you take the money and run or stay and ruin your health with 4.5 hour walks. Also will this package be available in the future or will the MTSF be binned and we will only get the basic redundancy.

On top of any VR packages in our office Royal Mail are offering to buy back colleague shares at a cost of £1400.

The writing is on the wall for MTSF as during the "small difficulty" of 2007 one of their aims was to change the MTSF into something more commercially viable yet sympathetic to the employee

Buying back employee shares - why - they are worth nothing at the moment, I would read the fine print on the offer as IIRC they can't be traded either.

On colleagueshares there is a dividend due soon so perhaps thats what they mean though £1400 seems a bit high.

I took EVR 20+ years ago - for a very similar amount to what is being offered NOW - though I was well paid then and so the deal was commensurate with that. I was 42+ or so and had sufficient cash to not work for some considerable time - I lasted 6 months, doing jobs round the house, garden and generally relaxing for the 1st time since leaving school - however, once the work is done and you've relaxed and dined out so many times - you get bored and want to go back to work. I applied for a job at RM, thinking to go back to work and create another career, I was successful in getting a vacancy but then I looked at college courses and decided to go back to college. I took a course in general building but concentrating on plumbing and solid fuel central heating installation. That took a year or so and although it was very constructive and I enjoyed it and learned a great deal, the work was very heavy - solid fuel boilers are very heavy, coal, or wood or oil. I decided to reapply to RM and this time I decided I would like to be a postman and work outdoors not realising of course that I would finish my working life at RM because I enjoyed it so much - or used to do.

So the moral of the tale is - don't be too reticent in thinking that this easy money for the next 20 years - because in my experience the ESI has changed beyond all recognition to the environment I worked in 20 years ago and so will RM in the next 20. A change of career funded by RM would not be to everyone's taste but I can only say I chose that route 20 years ago and for better or worse I have never regretted taking that leap from the comfort zone to the unknown.

The problem is, the job as we know it will not be there for much longer--it is perhaps wise to take what is on
offer.

If I were you, I wouldn't even be considering leaving for £30k. We're in the midst of a Credit Crunch, with rapidly rising unemployment. What's the good of a good payout, if you can't get a new job?
What'll you do if you run out of money, before getting another job?
Personally, I'd need to be offered at least 3 years wages, to even consider it. At least until the unemployment situation improves.
