John Prescott has held secret talks to resolve the growing row over a Royal Mail sell-off.
The ex-deputy PM has been drafted in after Gordon Brown faced a backbench rebellion over plans to sell a 30 per cent stake to a private company to modernise the public service.
More than 140 Labour MPs have condemned Business Secretary Lord Mandelson's plans which may leave the PM relying on Tory votes or facing a Commons defeat.
But Mr Prescott met Lord Mandelson and Billy Hayes of the Communication Workers Union to try to broker a "face saving" deal between them.
He is said to be openminded after the successful part sell-off of Air Traffic Control in the 90s which now brings in profits for taxpayers.
One option is setting up a BBC-style trust which the Government would accept alongside modernisation. The CWU will not consider any privatisation but said: "We are happy to talk to anyone who could find a solution."
