Manager arguments

Post by tragictramp »

hi all, as usual not a week goes by without some argument or problem with my manager.

basically i have stopped using my car these days and as such the job now takes me longer, a lot longer in fact. with no proper pouch boxes i end up carrying more so its slowing me down etc etc. well i have still been going in early by at least 45 mins per day (i start at 9 end at 1pm), on tuesday morning after prepping my mail for 30 mins "8.45" (which is not my job) i stopped and spoke to a colleague for about 2 minutes the dom basically shouted across to me, "what are u doing, why are u talking, u want a lift out dont u, i replied with i have been working for half an hr and dont start till 9, he had a bit of a serious face. Yesterday the mail was very heavy and being that im only contracted to work 4 hours i decided to prep a lot of the d2d's and as such i completed my round at 1.45pm 45 mins over.

Today i arrived in work 45 mins early yet again and notice my round is extremely heavy, (large council flat items), i went to find my line manager to tell him i didnt believe i would be able to complete the round in time, he was as usual having a fag outside with the main dom (the enemy) i told him i would not be able to complete and the main dom butted in with what u doing out here then so i replied informing my line manager that i dont think ill complete, again he did not like that i answered back.

on returning inside i decided to go and book the 45 mins overtime from the previous day, the guy who runs the wages/timesheets asked me to check with the dom if he was happy with this being booked, as he was in the same room i asked him their, he asked the reason y i worked over and i replied with d2d prep and i dont usually get out till after every 1 else, as packet drivers etc have already left the office and a manager drops me out after 10, he then get a bit angry and told me that i would not get paid for it as d2d is paid seperate, i then told him that he was wrong as in d2d's should be prepped the same time as the mail and i have seen the agreement and it clearly states it should be completed within normal working hours, with this he totally lost the plot and said dont go quoting rules and regulations son im the boss and what i say goes, i replied with u may be my boss but u do not make the regulations and cannot just decide to get people to do whatever he wanted, and said if i dont get paid it i would have to cut off 45 mins at somepoint in the future. another manager with a bit of sense tried to reason with the dom that i was in fact correct regarding the d2d's but he told him to be quiet as well and said this was final.

well after all that i got out to delivery at 10.15 and didnt finish till 1.30, so i will be booking more o/time tomorrow.

basically i dont go looking for arguments i just want to work without no hassle but be paid what i am entitled to, i have always gone in early and never booked for me going in early only if i do not finish by 1pm.

with this in mind i might just work exactly to my agreed hours and tell them i will not work 1 minute over my contracted times and not prep any mail as it should already be done. for 4 hrs work this is a lot of work, finish prep, d2d prep, redirections, deads, tie up, then finally find a manager to get me to my round, the walk is a 3.5 hr one as well, so i think their basically talking s**t!

rant over

what would u lot do? (burning the place down seems appropriate lol :coolr

cheers

I understand exactly where you are coming from here, the main problem is you used to use your car and now don't (that really pisses them off - Good on you). secondly you were going in early, They love that and will argue that if you had come in at the correct time the prep would hae been done! been there also. If you go in on your start time and its not fully preped and you won't be finished on time approach your mager and say i won't be finished on time what do you want me to do? Its his job to sort it out, It still has to be prepped so do it and if you have to cut off its less out door work for you and if they'll pay you OT and you want it (stipulating want it as it can't not be forced upon you) then do it. I do this all the time play them at their own game and follow the rules to the letter.

However never say you are doing OT because of D2D because it won't work and they will refuse to pay you. Do only 20% of d2d each day prep and delivery and if you can't finish state workload as the reason. RM won't include d2d as workload but it is compulsary and must be completed in duty time, prep and delivery. And when they complain at that tell them to refer to the 1995 addendum to the national agreement (and the subsequent joint statement).

I used to use my car, come in early all these things until my DOM put so much upon me it was impossible so I stopped it all and now do the job properly. That was back in September last year and its only been the last couple of months that the I have not been pressured and bullied because of it. But he still trys it on sometimes and d2d is his latest but I've got news for him this week as I've just had a email back from Adam Croziers office stating the content of the 1995 aggrement and that will really get up his nose when I pass it on to my union rep in the morning.

Not go in early for a start!
You `might` just work your agreed hours....yes thats what your suppose to do,if you want overtime then you book it,if the manager doesn`t want to pay you or starts giving you grief then either tell him your not ever going to do overtime again and he can arrange the extra work to somebody else ,or you could complain about him(kangaroo court anybody?)....afterall RM is always banging on about diversity and anti bullying, maybe you should point him out to the nearest Dignity In The Workplace poster.
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09

One other thing I forgot to say. Don't argue with them as you should know they are always right. As long as you know you are in the right let it go over your head as much as possible otherwise you will find yourself up on a conduct charge for arguing with them. Yes they will do that given a chance.

Good on you tragictramp for standing up for yourself. Most of us have found out that the more good will that we put into the job, the more of an advantage RM doms try to take of us. Remember, those rules and regulations are the only thing that stand between us as workers and us as virtual slaves.
Having a war with them over your duty span is not easy, but the question remains, do they appreciate you coming in early and going over your time? No, they are funny when you book over and moan when you stop for 2 minutes.
The worse part about this phase 3 is that it has isolated us all and the wolves are now circling. Like I said to my union rep, I had nothing against the principle of working all my paid hours, but with this has to come them doing their jobs properly, enough safe drops, conveyance, pouch box keys, and paying us without question when we do genuinely go over. Sadly this isn't happening and we are seeing a rather nasty side of RM at the moment....

:Applause :Applause Tragict ,but why go in early ? You did not design the duty structure that clearly does not work.It is not your responsibility to make an unrealistic work pattern function correctly. Indeed by attempting to compensate for RM's shoddy cost cutting management by doing unpaid hours, you are in effect giving the green light to your bullshitting manager to continue and extend his abuse of the system.
