A NEW TERM FOR UNSKILLED

Currently a Postie Job is classed as unskilled because we do not need any formal qualifications to apply for the job. However this is an emotive phrase and some see it as denigrating and demeaning. I wonder if any members of RMC can come up with a sensible alternative. After all, as with most "unskilled" jobs there are skills you need to learn to do the job more than adequately.

There must be new classifications for workers nowadays.Many years ago ,there were were at least seven, and cleaners were classed as semi- skilled.The job may be classified as 'unskilled' but not the people who do it.It has only been downgraded because this allows employers to pay a lower wage,check it out.!

That's not true; "semi-skilled" means able to do the simplest tasks, like making the tea and carrying the skilled person's tool box. "Unskilled" would be the person making sure the toilets are cleaned.

Honest-just google it up! The government do have several categories of workers-and, sub categories, there used to
be seven, but some years ago, they had managed to come up with a further eight. (Promise -I used to work in this field,
god knows how many they have now-just look at their own web-sites. some companies do get tax breaks and training allowances for taking on 'so called unskilled workers-hence the downgrading of categories.

Quite right, after all, it took time and effort to aquire it (like all skills), but having "a" skill isn't the same as the accepted definition of "being" skilled.

Everyone is 'skilled ' at what they do surely ?Can you make a good cup of tea?Just watch the Apprentice- by definition.

hmmm.. just because someone has university degree does't mean they are skilled in tea making... its all a load of tosh really.. of course driving is a skill. who makes up these categories?? some jobsworth i bet lollllllllll

Definition "A SKILL" "to do something well" Oxford dictionary!. Would one call BROWN skilled or unskilled or incompetent!.

I've only been an OPG for 2 weeks but already I have an appreciation for the job that I never did before, I don't know about the legal definition's for skilled/un-skilled but I do know that this job is both physically and mental more demanding than my last job which was classed as junior management.

AFAIK - In order for the job to be classed as skilled you must be able to gain a recognised qualification for it - Ie. an "A" Level in Postal deliveries or an NVQ Level 1 In Postal Deliveries and again AFAIK there isn't one.

To me this is a skilled job - watching you guys do what you do in terms of moving mail from one side of a DO the frame and out within the time frame is truly impressive.

I am a worker(doing something i dont want to do, in order to afford to live).
