As the Postal Services Bill has its first committee day today (Tuesday) the CWU says that the 98 amendments reveal the Bill's shortcomings and ultimately Lord Mandelson's miscalculation.
Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: "Lord Mandelson was hoping by putting this Bill through the House of Lords that it would have a smooth and swift passage, but he has misjudged the interest in and importance of Royal Mail.
"It's clear that the Lords understand the problems facing Royal Mail and are prepared to get to grips with these in detail. 98 amendments for the first committee day is a significant level of engagement with the legislation.
"We are pleased that former postman Lord Clarke is defending the UK's postal services along with other peers.
"Royal Mail can and must have a successful future in full public ownership. We welcome modernisation, responsibility on pensions and the change of regulator but do not see the need for privatisation. This element of the Bill must be amended to ensure a successful future for the UK's postal industry."
