Postal worker held a town centre demonstration this afternoon to protest against government plans to sell off part of Royal Mail.

Members of the Watford branch of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) petitioned passers-by in Charter Place today.

Alan Walsh, branch secretary of the union, said more than 1,000 signatures had been collected as shoppers stopped off to show their support for the union, which is fighting Government plans to sell off a stake in Royal Mail.

He said: “The response from the public has been fantastic, they have all said they are against the sell off of the Post Office.

“We have seen how privatisation has failed in the past. We still make a profit, we have always made a profit, we have a cheap postal service and we have a good postal service.”

The Government has said selling off 30 per cent of Royal Mail to the private sector is the only way of guaranteeing its future.

However, Mr Walsh added: “No-one has said they don't agree with us, in fact a lot of people have come across and said the are really annoyed it is being talked about.”
