Peter Mandelson: Back me on Royal Mail part-privatisation plan

Business Secretary Peter Mandelson yesterday warned Labour's Royal Mail rebels they should accept part-privatisation - because it could be fully sold off under the Tories.

He said his plans for the sale of a 30 per cent stake in the postal service were the government's "last throw of the dice".

And an "alternative" government would offer a far worse deal to workers and people who wanted daily letters.

Over 140 Labour MPs have signed a motion attacking the plans as parliament prepares to debate the Postal Services Bill which would allow the sell-off.

But on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show, Lord Mandelson issued another plea for the rebels to think again. He insisted the Royal Mail's situation was "very serious" and finances had to be "turned round".

He said: "People should look at what we are proposing and see it as a much better deal for the Royal Mail and those who work in it than anything any alternative government would offer. I think this is the last throw of the dice."

His warning came after it was reported TNT - tipped to take over much of the work under the plans - was forced to pay back tens of millions in unpaid tax.

And union the CWU, which will soon publish its own economic model for the future of the Royal Mail, hit back at Lord Mandelson by saying: "He should not be gambling with public services. There is an alternative. We need modern ideas."

What a sneak! Earlier, he was basically saying to the rebels that if they didn't back the measure, it would pave the way for a tory government. Now the slime ball is basically admitting that the next government will not be labour. One smells a rat behind all of this. I'm no David Icke, but something tells me that these people are answering to a higher agenda, and it ain't the great British public.

I had a sneaking suspicion that Mandy could be one of those shape shifting reptilian illuminati overlords that David Ike talks about.

Well , when he got green slime thrown all over him he looked strangely content

conclusive proof.
