ROYAL MAIL’S MODERNISATION PLANS - MEETING 2ND & 3RD MARCH 2009
The Postal Executive and Divisional Reps received a full report yesterday from the Union’s National officers on a meeting that took place with Royal Mail’s senior management team on 2nd and 3rd March.

The meeting covered the following subjects.

• Business performance over the last year.
• Senior management reorganisation.
• RM Commercial Strategies.
• RM Delivery/Collection strategy
• RM Processing strategy
• RM Network strategy
• RM People Strategy

The outcome of the meeting was that both parties agreed to exchange proposals within the next week on how we urgently take forward discussions on all aspects of Royal Mail’s future plans.

Let me make a prediction....nothing the union puts forward will be listened to....

Correct me if I am wrong, but were these not the talks that the union called off the pre-Xmas mail centre strikes for????

And further, we heard a big hoo haa about how MK mail centre was to be defended and not allowed to be shut....heard nothing since...is it closing or isn't it?

Knowing that these meetings were inevitable and knowing the problems we face, not least of all from RM itself they intend to "exchange proposals" - so what exactly did they do for two days - would an exchange of views not have taken place in two days - would we not have had proposals ready? It strikes me that RM have given the CWU their proposals and the leadership are looking at ways to sweeten the bitter pill - a bit like the pay and modernisation and the pension which we have apparently lost - though no ballot ever took place for that.

The first day was taken up with prenesentations on the traffic trends and financial positon. Including new products etc. Royal Mail disucssed their automation strategy as well. The second day was taken up with discussing and debating Royal Mail`s modensation strategy. They are due to meet the bussiness next to explore agreeing a framework for discssions.

Anyone who has been in negotations like this before will know that the list of subjects which will need to be within an agreement is huge and presntations and understanding is often needed before you negotaite an agreement. We are playing for high stakes and whilst the talks cant drag on they must cover in detail all the issues including how we protect jobs including full time jobs as well as pay etc.

Agreed you cannot do anything in two days but why have royalmail and the CWU not been discussing this since the 2007 pay and modenization argreement was voted in!. And if royalmail did not want too talk nor meet why have we not been kept up to date i know there was a breif at the end of sep 2008 and one just before christmas but what happened between dec 2007 and the end of sept 2008!. Hooper covered the traffic trends and we have our own researchers. There is no dispute that this is a complex issue BUT you do not go to these meetings blind - at the very least there should have been an agenda prior to the meeting and OUR proposals should have been ready - as a previous poster said these matters have been in attendance since 2007 so what has happened since then? I noticed RM put forward their proposals and so they were ready - as per usual it is a question of reaction. Does anyone know what the proposals are? We get a little tired of the secretive meetings without being told a damn thing - any proposals should be published and a straw poll taken on what is and is not acceptable. Are we about to snatch defeat from the jaws of , well certainly not victory, yet again?

Sorry but I can`t help it.....I keep getting the sketch from Not the Nine O`clock news where they was arguing about the chair and then over who gets to bonk who`s wife,with the daughter to be phased in by year whatever.
The only thing we have to bother about is we will all be working far harder with less people whilst getting shat on from both sets of clowns.So nothing new there then.

Forgive my ignorance comrades but hasn't one of the issues we have had with the employer been their secrecy and refusal to share their plans with the CWU?

On that basis some of the criticism of the CWU top brass in this thread has been unfair.

Big Daz in deliverys they have shown their 5 phase strategy which is to achieve a part time mix in all areas of a 70/30 split as a miniumn. In mail centres we know that a few years ago they had a plan which reduced the network to 33 mail centres and in logistics we know network 2009 is on the hoizen. Royal Mail revealed their plans last week . But its was never about revealling their plans it was about getting the right agreement for the future.
