Special leave would be granted, wether it is paid or not is up to your manager (it's usually unpaid). If you have any days in lieu, you can ask for these to be used so that you still get paid or you can ask for days to be taken from your annual leave.
RM will expect you to make alternative arrangements, (a grandparent or other relative) within a couple of days of going absent, but this isn't always possible.
I've never had any problems taking emergency leave for my kids, but my manager knows my family come first.

Special leave is usually the case.. As above can be paid or unpaid - most likely unpaid.. Not ideal missing out on pay but family comes before work for me, I can always claw back what I lost by various means..

throw phase 3 in there phase say no cost to royal mail bank my hours if the worst comes to the worst then just say sorry im family frendly i carnt go later then 2pm when they want there hours back

You can take unpaid carers leave and its a right not a request. If your manager tells you your wife should take it from her company and not you, speak to your rep about equal opportunities and get a grievance form.
