Re: communism
There are only two communist countries left, Cuba and China.
Cuba will dump communism as soon as Fidel dies and China is communist in name only.
In practise, it'san oligarchy.
(unless, of course, anyone else knows more)

Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital, creates an unequal society, and does not provide equal opportunities for everyone in society. Therefore socialists advocate the creation of a society in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly based on the amount of work expended in production,

North Korea , Laos and Vietnam all consider themselves and are recognised as Communists, but I think that is now the total list.Thorby Bislam wrote:There are only two communist countries left, Cuba and China.

"
Fighting real or mythical enemies is/was one of the standard tactics of Communism ; when it's countries, it takes the public gaze off the day-to-day stuff, like why is there no bread/vegetables/meat/fuel/etc, or why we need a huge standing army of conscripts, or why are there rigidly enforced state borders, or why does the state need so much military hard-ware, or why do people who criticise the state disappear in the night, or how does my brother in the West own a Mercedes and all I have is a push-bike, and so many other questions which they don't/didn't want them to ask.
When the fighting's at party level, it takes the emphasis away from members asking how they're actually going to achieve anything, or what they intend to do about something, or even if they have any plans.
Conflict can mask many problems.
'Course, as TBT says, not many Communist countries left now. Shame that so many millions had to live in misery, or die, just to prove that Marx' Great Social Experiment was all smoke and mirrors and doomed to fail from the outset.
It's about time the Idiot's Edifice in Highgate was removed too, as he indirectly caused more deaths than any one else in history. The top head part could be moved to a MacDonalds restaurant (?) run by Poles, just for the final ironic twist.
Think I'll start an E-petition to do just that.
Have you read 1984 by George Orwell? It's nothing to do with greed.linkinpark"]The real strange thing to me is they all "Communists- Socialists" spend more time fighting each other tha the real enemy! GREED! Why is that?

Re: communism
That's quite a good definition. Straight and to the point. Capitalism can never operate a fair society and that goes for state capitalism which is what operated in Russia once control was taken out of the hands of the workers after the October Revolution.eroader wrote:Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital, creates an unequal society, and does not provide equal opportunities for everyone in society. Capitalism has been killing the planet for the last couple of centuries and twice has broken down into world war. Only the criminally insane would defend it.
The Industrial Workers of the World. The union whose members never scab!

Ahh, that old get out clause again.
The excusing of the abject failure of any Communist nation or state by saying "but they weren't really Communist,so it doesn't count".
Strange that the USSR and China (to name just two) both described themselves as "Communist". Still, what did they know, eh?
Capitalism has been killing the planet for the last couple of centuries
That Man has been killing the planet for the last couple of centuries is true, but saying it was the system known as Capitalism is bizarre to say the least. The old Communist Bloc, China etc have a much worse record on the environment than any notionally Capitalist countries. Hang on though, I forgot, they're not Communist, are they?
Strange that, as most historians put both World Wars down to a mixture of Imperialism and Nationalism. That said, the USSR was champing at the bit to head West in 1939 to grab as much as it could. Hang on a minute (2), they weren't Communist though, were they?and twice has broken down into world war.
Good to still see an old-time Left wing hard-liner though. I thought most went back to train-spotting or real ale about 1989, when the truly dire state of the old Communist Bloc economies and countries was laid bare. Oh hang on a minute (3).......

Re: communism
Just because a country describes itself as a Communist state does not actually mean it is a communist state.
Definition: Communism
1. A theoretical economic system characterized by the collective ownership of property and by the organization of labour for the common advantage of all members.
2. Communism
A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people.
Perhaps you are mistaking Communism as an ideology, with the Marxist-Leninist version of Communist doctrine that advocates the overthrow of capitalism by the revolution of the proletariat, that the USSR and China employed and then used to control their populations.
After all there are plenty of current and past totalitarian states that called themselves democratic and plainly were not. For instance:
German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik)
People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (Jumhūrīyah al-Yaman ad-Dīmuqrāţīyah ash-Sha'bīyah)
Lao People's Democratic Republic (Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxon Lao)
