I like many have been guilty of heavy overweight bags,goes on trolley so not a problem

Recently we a serious accident in our office,with a guy requiring Hospital treatment due to falling over.When they weighed his bags all over weight.
Now we understand he cannot take any action against RM as he did not follow the guide lines.

This has got some of us worried,as any time any one of us could have have a accident.So recently we have been weighing our bags and going by the guide lines.
we are shocked at how it works,the number of bags you need to comply.

Now if we all comply ,drivers are ging to be running around in circles 6 bags x6 guys min =36 drop bags.

If we dont comply,will keep the driver happy and some other guys on the van who need to get home early.If we have a accident and they check our bags , tough on us as our bags are over weight.

If we comply we are covered by the Company,but then you are going to upset the driver and some other guys on the van ?

Think the only answer is to have correct bag weights,but what about the ones who dont want to do the job properley and drivers who have to get back early for SA.

Is anything in RM black and white and straightforward?

of course its black and white.....keep the bag weights inside the royal mail / health & safety guidlines....ok the drivers will be going round in circles dropping them off......thats what he is paid for....if he doesnt have time to say do packets or another part of his duty it shows that there are not enough hours in the day for completion because the postmen/women are struggling to cope as well as there walks are to big / heavy due to cuts
i have 8 bags a day and only 3 pouch boxes ( 1 of which is in the wrong place ) so he has to either wait till i empty 1 or find me to hand 1 over
just do your job properly and you will have nothing to worry about

you are right,too many people flying round to get finished and not giving a sh-t about health and safety until something like this happens.

If everyone did their jobs by the weight matrix and other guidelines most offices would have duties put back in.

This is not a theory - in my section of a very large office we had 4 walks taken out when gio routed. Then we, the drivers and walkers had a meeting and we all decided to follow CWU and Royal Mail guidelines and regulations. Since then all but 1 walk has been put back in.

BTW why are people so concerned about finishing early as the next stage of Royal Mails policy on modernisation is "Working all paid hours", its going to be a bit late to get used to this fact when they do implement it as by then they will keep adding to your duties to make you up to your contracted hours.

Therefore IMHO it is your own interests to work to the guidelines now and get used to working to your time.

The guidelines I follow on a daily basis are.

Start at correct time (not 1 minute late or early)
Take full contracted break at suggested times
Weigh all bags and ensure they comply with the matrix
Take 20% of D2Ds
Use RM pass for public transport (or be accelerated out)
include pouching off in work time
cut off or claim OT

My advice WORK TO THE RULES TODAY OR PAY THE CONSEQUENCES TOMORROW.

trueblueterrier you are so right m8....if only the morons in my office in rutherglen would do the work to rule they would be so much better off....i would etimate 20% OF THEM GIVE AT LEAST 1 HOUR A DAY FOR FREE BY STARTING EARLY AND NOT TAKIN BREAKS......BY THE WAY I WORK IN AN OFFICE WITH IN EXCESS OF 75 POSTMEN/WOMEN.....DO THE MATHS

Well said (Again). The problem is we will continue to say it over and over again and still we get those that think they know best and will still not do the job right making us all suffer even more.

The union would have to be very careful as work to rule can be classed as unofficial industrial action.

I was told only last week that starting time is the time you have to be ready to start work at, not the time you walk through the door.
I.E. start time of 6:00 mens come in at 5:55 to take coats off, get ready, to start IPS at 6:00 exactly. Have I been doing it wrong ?

We don't get accelerated to our duties so we get issued a free bus pass, or claim for the bus fares. Its all locally arranged so you'll have to check with your reps and managers what they do.
