what is the hardest job in royal mail/cwu

Post by marky »

lets have a nice wee debate on this. i personally think the hardest job in royal mail is that of a delivery post person.
and maybe the hardest job in the cwu is finding a way to take home the members money without having a red face.

Hardest Job in Royal Mail - Depends on how you measure it. A walking postie has the hardest job in terms of weight on the back and the amount of time we have to carry it.

But what about those that run machines in a Mail Centre I am sure that needs a lot of concentration.

LGV drivers - lot of responsibility there when you are responsible for effectively is a 40 tonne unguided missile if anything goes wrong. Also they have to abide by various laws with regards to working times and mandatory rest periods which is very confusing and bureaucratic .

Callers Office - done that - no physical labour over a protracted period but a lot of stress and abuse from customers no matter how polite you are to them. I was threatened with being stabbed once because a blokes packet was not back even though we say wait 48 hours and he had waited 2.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the CWU - local rep must be the hardest job - they get earache from posties when RM try it on, on when someone disagrees with an agreement. They get hassle from RM locally when the CWU nationally decide on a particular policy (as in at the moment when we should not be agreeing savings), the will get instructions from Branch or Area or Division they have to adhere to. They also have to represent members interests in local discussions (not easy as if you have 100 posties in an office, that means 100 opinions, interests and positions to take into account). Not forgetting that they may be required to be an advocate/witness for members who are being disciplined or interviewed by management. They also have to keep their members informed on many varied matters on both local and national matters, and worse if there is only 1 rep then they have to do both the IR and H&S duties as well. All of this unpaid and on a voluntary basis. :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause :Applause

SO though I appreciate your frustration with certain CWU paid officials I think there is no contest CWU local rep is the hardest job in the CWU.

Tongue-in-cheek?
If a lot of concentration involves reading a paperback/texting someone/attempting the Sun crossword/yapping about footie/moaning about someone getting more docket/talking in a foreign language on a mobile to someone probably five thousand miles away/chatting to that pretty bird from the manual section/eating a sarnie/drinking a coffee/or just gazing wistfully at the floor, then I suppose you're right, but otherwise.....

As that London operator said some years back, (a quote which has since passed into folklore) "these letters don't load them selves, y'know.."

As for the hardest job, that's clearly the job of canteen cook as it has an exam which no-one has yet managed to successfully pass.

It's not difficult if you are too stupid to know otherwise (and my manager would have difficulty out-thinking a glass of water  ).

Soon as I saw the thread title, the first one that came in my head was 'Unit Rep',no question,if you are a decent rep,you get more hassle, grief and all round trouble than any other job,so 'well done to you all'
The more you know, the worse it gets.

the delivery work must be by far the hardest job in rm. and i agree with those that say being a local rep is by far the hardest job in the cwu.
hats of to those who combine being the local rep and h&s rep. :Applause :Applause
but then i thought about it a bit more and as some of you said about the weight issue, would there not be some officials at CWU HQ finding it hard every week to carry the bags of the memberships money to there cars maybe after doing a 70 hour week sitting down with rm over lunch and maybe dinner and talking crap most of the time.
:hmmmm :hmmmm i just cant make up my mind. :arrrghhh

I believe the hardest job is having to put up with a multitude of mind numbing idiots who believe they are always right, whether from RM, CWU or the general public.
However once all has been explained in intricate detail to all sides, they will always come round to understanding there own and the rules and regulations, however this process unfortunately will always take a conciderable amount of time.
Those of us who have the willingness to see unjustice though because of there beliefs will be rewarded, this is because they will never be subjected to the mind numbing idiots who believe they are aways right.

This is not a full representation of RM, CWU or the general public just the unfortunates I have to endure over the years.

All that aside, as I have worked in all aspects of the job I feel that cutting and tipping is a full on back breaking job and also the callers office can have very trying times.

Has to be callers office as you not only have to put up with customers demanding this that and the other you have to spend all that extra time with the managers too.

Has to be the Callers office, after spending 3 years being verbally abused in the 'Room of Doom' going back on deliverys has been a breeze :dance
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
