TNT ‘no miracle workers’ insist CWU

On the day that Dutch postal operator TNT posted quarterly financial results showing operating profits down by over one-third, CWU general secretary Billy Hayes repeated union warnings not to sell them part of Royal Mail.

When Business Secretary Peter Mandelson announced the government's plans to offer a minority stake in Royal Mail to a private company last December, he argued that only the introduction of private-sector managerial and commercial expertise could lead Britain's postal industry into a positive future.

But, as Mr Hayes pointed out, the financial results of "the supposed miracle workers that the government wants to bring in demonstrate that the problems facing the postal industry are not unique to Royal Mail.

"These poor financial results give the lie to their touted expertise and undermine their position as a competent network provider and serious candidate to 'coach' the Royal Mail," he continued.

"Royal Mail's recent results run rings around this weaker competitor and show where expertise and strength in the British postal market really lies."
