how long can you be a rep without getting elected by the members in your office? say your office hadnt had an election for over 2 years would rm still treat you as the rep and wheel and deal with you? or would it give rm a free run to do what ever they wanted. or what if the rep changed things that rm wanted would the members still have to go along with it.

Forever as long as nomination forms are submitted to the CWU branch and yearly credentials are issued by the CWU branch.

The way my office looks at the moment I could go on just about forever as local rep and elected unopposed year on year, its all about getting people to stand. The rep that was in place in 1991 when i started stayed on as rep untill 2000 unopposed year after year.

How many offices actually inform the staff when an election is due and if there are any members willing to stand and how many just roll along in the old sweet way? I have never seen a list of when Branch meetings are to take place for example or minutes for liaison meetings which brings me back to the point that many branches are run by a small cabal for their own purposes and not for the good of the membership.

big daz what if the branch dont submit forms to the offices asking for nominations, and as you state what if YEARLY credentials are not issued to rm.

Then there is presunmably a breach of rules, however as your clearly referring to your own branch then I would suggets you write to the branch sec and ask for A) branch rules (my branch has its rules on its website for all to see ) which should tell you when and how elections are dealt with and B) ask the branch sec the question of when are elections next due to be held.

You may wish to suggest nomination forms could be added to branch website if you have one for downloading.

AGM's are open to all mbrs thats if the one for dvbuks branch gets advertised.

Dvbuk does your branch have a website that you can check and if so does it have contact details.

HQ site might have contact details for your branch.

Who says we don't? I have been an IR rep for 3 years trying my very best to change things locally because of the shambolic nature of our organisation. Last year our AGM was not advertised..it was held at a totally inappropriate time and more importantly, failed to issue to the members, or disclose at the meeting, the branch finances as required by their own rules....

I have just stood for election as Branch Secretary, failed to get in, but, in my opinion, unfairly thwarted by a somewhat mischievious mailshot to the members from the Branch commitee...needless to say I have put in an official complaint...

The fight to change things can get very nasty, especially when you are trying to unseat the gravy train...

So why dont you and some like minded chums get yourselves down to your branch meetings and start changing things?

I think wranglered has answered the question. The running of the union at local level shouldn't be a question of chasing information or having to ask for information - we are the communication union, all matters pertaining to the membership should be in hard copy and sent to each and every members workplace and clearly displayed - now I know that is not the case in my office and I'll bet mine is not the only one.

Sorry Linkin...a bit touchy at the moment.....3 of us stood, first time anyone has for years...we still polled 40% of votes cast...but not enough this time around...let's hope it is not too late with all these parasites playing Royal Mail's tune whilst saving their own skins!

There is no gravy train or peculiar handshakes,im still waiting for wrangled to tell us all what it is excatly thats happening that he defines as "gravy train" perhaps he dosent want the branch or its reps at bona fida union events?

It is also worth noting that wranglereds fellow nominee for the branch secretary job was not the previous branch secretary who has been seconded to head quarters. Wrangerled was up against the deputy branch secretary who was covering the branch sec job inline with branch rules untill the annual elections took place and who won fair and square by 220 votes.
