On the 5th February 100 postmen in Peterborough mail centre on delivery were stopped 4 hours pay.
This was after every man and women had come from as far away as 30 miles to attempt a service to the public.
As the day unfolded these people were subjected to management attempting to remove health and safety regulations in order to move people across functions. The workers showed complete solidarity and refused any attempt to ignore the regulations in place. 3 workplace meetings by the CWU ended with the members offering Royal Mail the opportunity to send them on the street to deliver a service. This was ignored and the stand off continued with the company eventually stopping pay at 10.30 am. It was made abundantly clear by management that breaking a union office was more important than looking after its staff.
The way these people were treated was at best a disgrace but when you attack a workforce who will not be intimidated it will become a long fight. As we write this the members have been out on delivery today in blizzards but sent back to the office for health and safety reasons. HOW IRONIC ! They will continue with the support of CWU headquarters attempt to retrieve the lost earnings. The battle has just began. Not just for Peterborough but everyone who has the fight to stop hypocrisy being in charge.
