"Wednesday 3 December WEATHER WARNING As the time for snow approaches, Northern Ireland is first in line for travel disruption. From 7pm the sky will start to bring rain sleet and snow. 5cm may accumulate on higher roads. Valid until 0400GMT
Wednesday 3 December EARLY WARNING There is a high risk of travel disruption as snow falls on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Up to 20cm is possible above 150m in Scotland and northern England with 2-5cm at lower levels. Strengthening winds will cause drifting and blizzards Further updates will appear here."

How come when the Met Office advises people to stay indoors and only make essential journeys, RM expects outdoor workers to risk life, limb and hypothermia as a matter of course?

In the old days in our office the dom wouldn't let you do a second delivery in severe weather, how times have changed and not for the better

One MC I go to had told me they already lost a Van due to ice on the road.

Got a parcelduty in a village thats already got and inch of snow. Van had no grip on some of the smaller streets.

I'd love to have some winter weather driving training as i'm not sure about skid control and the like

The rules are very simple, take your time, don't drive into somewhere that you don't think you'll get back out of and bring loads back to the office. Or, you could always just drive into the first place that you can't get out of and then phone them and get them to send someone out to extract you

.

The last time we had snow, I missed out about a third of the duty (including 1 entire road that was too dangerous to even get onto).

when I was last on a rural duty and it was snowing I asked what happens if I get stuck and was told it was nothing to do with them and I was to phone the RAC....so I played it very safe and didnt go anywhere near a street if it looked bad,
as a result of this I promptly signed for a walking job and told them where to stick their driving duties

Thats bollox, it's their van and their responsibility, after all they shouldn't expect you to arrange for all repairs to the vans

I drive a transit on a rural duty and yesterday was skidding all over the place. It made me think what do RM use on the VERY rural routes, have they got ant 4 x 4s anywhere.

I just wonder, when you see the number of schools that have been shut in the Northwest, some 200 or so - how many DOs have been shut down because of the weather?
