No I can't understand it eitherThe Mail Centre hours will gradually increase over the December period.
The hours are preplanned using forecast workload supplemented by adhoc
overtime where traffic forecast exceeds expectations. This accounts for
additional staffing levels above the normal year round staffing.
In addition, casual resource has commenced in the Mail Centre and the
perception is that more hours are being used and pressure has begun. The
additional resource takes into account the workload matched by a
performance indicator that recognises their training needs.
This process is accounted for within the Mail Centre budget in order that
the skill matches the workload increase against a planned performance rate.

I was given this reply whenever I asked why the Christmas pressure periods differed between MC's and DO's

Difference between MC pressure and DO pressure
Now that the volume of mail is falling I'm surprised we bother with Xmas pressure at all - surely we should be able to soak up the extra with all the slack we have.

All DO staff understand the mail is declining so no o/t needed all this stuff around us is a figment of our over active imagination
There is no extra mail being posted or packets so no extra staff or time is required,Thankyou. This is what our DIM told us all.

Just digging a bigger hole. Mail volumes are measured over a period of time against the same period in a previous year. Decreasing mail volumes doesn't really mean no-one's sending Xmas cards..........dvbuk55 wrote:Now that the volume of mail is falling I'm surprised we bother with Xmas pressure at all - surely we should be able to soak up the extra with all the slack we have.

I'd lay off the Mogadon if I were you - it's sending you to sleep - wake up and smell the coffee, better still get down to a delivery office and speak to those who do, not pontificate on statistics. If mail is falling then surely the excess at Christmas would only fill the gap - or is that beyond your ken? As for the measuring of mail being a period of time over a period of time - maybe it's more a question of a bag over the shoulder.Tman wrote:Just digging a bigger hole. Fozzie's already covered this point earlier; DO staff aren't in a position to give an accurate assessment of the situation as their only indicator is "bags over shoulder" as you say. Hardly the overview needed.I'd lay off the Mogadon if I were you - it's sending you to sleep - wake up and smell the coffee, better still get down to a delivery office and speak to those who do, not pontificate on statistics.
If business mail volumes have dropped between 2-5% over the last couple of years, and Xmas post is at 150-180% of usual traffic, you're hardly likely to notice any reduction, are you? A bit more than "only filling the gap" wouldn't you say?If mail is falling then surely the excess at Christmas would only fill the gap - or is that beyond your ken?
That's the problem, it isn't. There are many factors as to why you and the rest have more to deliver, and some of those factors have been highlighted on here. Thing is though, all the while you choose only to think it's all part of some grand conspiracy to fool the posties, you are missing what's really going on, or is that beyond your ken...As for the measuring of mail being a period of time over a period of time - maybe it's more a question of a bag over the shoulder

No truly Tman - are you a professional B*llshitt*r or is it just a hobby?
I work in a DO but I don't deliver, that doesn't mean to say that I am not aware of nor capable of understanding the difference in mail volumes. In the past we used to record daily volumes of mail by weight - how exactly do we record it now - or do we record it now, or simply rely on yours and fozzies opinion.

[Sigh]
Forget the tired old cut'n'paste insults, they really don't improve your argument in the slightest...
Great, so you do recognise the various factors involved, then?I work in a DO but I don't deliver, that doesn't mean to say that I am not aware of nor capable of understanding the difference in mail volumes.
RM doesn't, and never has, assessed daily traffic by weight. Cue-"what do you know, our DO has always weighed mail etc etc" which may be true, but that mail has already been counted through the system. There's not some little postie sitting in an office adding up all the inward DO weight calculations nationwide. In the past we used to record daily volumes of mail by weight - how exactly do we record it now - or do we record it now, or simply rely on yours and fozzies opinion
It's collated nationally on automation stats automatically downloaded on a WAN.

I'm not quite sure you have grasped the tenure of the argument here but in simple terms I'll spell it out for you, try and stay awake:
I work in a DO, the former method of assessing OUR workload (ie in the DO) was by weight, not wholly accurate but nevertheless a reasonable guideline because I saw what was arriving, it wasn't a statistic. Now, and try to follow this if you're still awake, I see the mail arriving NOW, we don't weigh it, there IS more because I can see it, and no it isn't a double image nor imaginary, Now let me guess, you've never seen a delivery office have you - but I'll bet you know how statistically inefficient they are. If there is no more mail we had better send the counters on a basic numeracy course and if someone is inputting the data they should try it with more than 2 fingers.

So you see it arrive in your DO, and from what you see you disbelieve the assertion that mail volumes nationally are dropping, even though RM, CWU, and business leaders have all said less items are being processed?
Must be that old "bag over the shoulder" logic again.
Probably more than you ever will, but move on...Now let me guess, you've never seen a delivery office have you
No, haven't a clue, or even if this measurement is possible. Is it relevant?- but I'll bet you know how statistically inefficient they are.
There are no manual inputters.......If there is no more mail we had better send the counters on a basic numeracy course and if someone is inputting the data they should try it with more than 2 fingers

Difference between MC pressure and DO pressure
I am attatched to a Mail Centre and i have worked there and now i'm in the DO which is where i started many years ago,in the DO we have always measured the mail by weight and we have always cut and tipped our own mail, the mail centre has done its cutting and tipping itself but went from weighing mail to putting the mail in boxes with a fill level and an average fill quote, when i first started and we had 2nd gen coding we had green and red trays that were open at the front and even then had a fill quote and traffic was collected every single day as traffic means jobs,i see now that there is more mail around even though our DIM says there is not but i have noticed that the traffic is not collected or weighed its just ignored,if the WLA was done to the true in the DO's i think they would loose the argument that the work load is less,so now the DO is very poor at traffic measurement but trust us when we say there is a lot around. The new way is the managers take a guess at what is in the office and then book it down.

When we say mail volumes are declining are we just talking about royal mail, or do we include TNT, UKmail etc?

I believe that when they are talking about mail declining they are talking about Royal Mail,i believe that we are all having a hard time no matter who you work for, packet traffic has increased due to internet shopping ebay being one area that has caused packet traffic to rocket.
