Over 50's on deliveries

Post by Sandyman »

This will need someone with a long memory and knowledge of the rules.

I recall seeing, possibly in the 1990's, a set of Postal Instructions or an agreement which mentioned that assistance should be available to over 50's on walks. Of course it was seriously ignored by the management, but I wonder if it is still around to call on, possibly as a H & S issue?

Sorry not much help but I can also vaguely recall reading something of a similar nature ages and ages ago but as regards to health and safety issue the H&S LTBs only go as far back as 2001 on the CWU website.

This was the case albeit some years back not sure if this rule is still operative but my guess is they would fight tooth and nail to stop you using this as we are now more efficent aren't we :chuckle so the job is much easier than years ago isn't it

I was about 57 when I gave up delivering due to a bad knee, then a stroke but I do recall that subject being brought up before on the old CWU forum after I'd given up delivering but it wasn't mentioned at shop floor level. Maybe someone older than me can recall it - it would certainly help those who are going to be delivering beyond 60.

I asked a senior postie about it and he told me that the concession offered was that post 50 year olds at one time were allowed to take lighter bag weights but this has been superseded by health and safety rules on maximum weights for first and subsequent pouches for everybody and therefore there is now no concession.

I suppose in an age where in theory we are all living and working longer, we should remain in reasonable physical condition and be able to cope. As a person almost out of their '50's I would appeal to my younger colleagues not to burn themselves out too early trying to reach impossible standards for the sake of a quiet life, and to do the job with their future physical well being in mind.
