Specials. How many a day?

Hi All.

Can anyone tell me the official amount of Specials I'm expected to take out on a walk each day.
Normally get around 3 or 4 but had 9 today.

I believed it to be 8 but my DIM said it's now unlimited.

Told him I didn't feel safe carrying that many around my walk.
But he just said "Who's to know". Very Helpfull !!!

Is there any official written agreement I can get hold off.

Oh, and no union rep in my office, so can't ask. LOL!

Suggest you view in full under the downloads section the CWU Lighten the Load Booklet:

Pr iority Services Items
Do not carry more than the maximum number allowed. Do not expose yourself to risks.
If it is a high risk area then refer to the “WalkSafe” threat assessment procedure as it may
be necessary to reduce the number or remove these items completely on certain walks.
The important thing is that a Walk Risk Assessment must be carried out and such assessments
based on local knowledge and previous incidents may override these standards to ensure
the most appropriate safety and security protection levels are maintained at all times.
(A maximum of 8 Special Delivery (SD) individual items per walk may be carried each day,
of which no more than 3 may be higher value SD items, a maximum of 48 SD individual
items per walk each week of which no more than 18 may be higher value SD items. Walks
exceeding this standard number of items per week must to be Risk Assessed to determine
the appropriate method of delivery and whether it needs to be motorised. Ideally collection
and deliveries in town centre areas should be motorised. For the full details on Motorised/

I've printed several copies off and will be presenting one to DIM in the morning
and one to the locker boys too.

Just to be sure though. This is the most up to date agreement isn't it?

I cover a town walk on a day off and the most specials i've had to take out in a trolley is 30!!! thats on 1 day

The person in the locker should have more sense. A HCT delivery is still a walk and does not mean you are able to carry more than the regulation 8 or 5 if they are high value. There hasn't been any new instructions as far as I know and I work in the locker and prepare the specials for delivery. If anyone knows any differently I'd be happy to hear of any changes.

Although not relevant to this issue but are there any OPGs working in the locker having a problem dealing with the tracked items coming through?

Walking deliveries at my office don't take specials - they all go on driving duties as we couldn't guarantee return to the RLE for processing or delivery by the required times on our walks - it makes sense - more secure delivery, protected from the weather and returned on time if undelivered.

469 Special Delivery Items
Due to the current state of deliveries and the consequential increase in time on the street for many of our members. This BOB paragraph is to remind Branches of the maximum number of special delivery items to be carried on each delivery and the procedures applicable.

All foot and cycle deliveries - 8 maximum.

Identifiable high value - 3 maximum (this does not mean 5 lower value can also be taken).

All deliveries should be risk assessed in order to protect members from potential attack where high value items are identified. In some cases this may require single items to be delivered by other means e.g. vehicle delivery.

Any enquiries to Bob Gibson, Acting Assistant Secretary, Postal Outdoor Dept. quoting reference 530.

another question to do with specials,your right the max is 8 but by right these specials should be carried with you at all times and not left in cars or pouch bins, right or wrong ? and if right how do u carry 8 specials of various sizes plus your mail.if i have any specials that i cant carry easily in pouch ie just letters or a4 or maybe 1 or 2 packets then the driver gets them.

Correct. All specials should be on your person (as in the pouch you are carrying) at all times. Yes the drivers should take oversize ones and your Manager should use common sense if you have a few bulky ones.

terrier is there anything written down as to that you have to carry specials on you at all times, know its a fact but could you point me in direction of where i would find it written down,lot of people leaving them in cars and pouch bins and maybe they need to see that they could be conduct coded if things go t..ts up

Yes, I wish. I think there is a case for all packets, and signed fors going out in the vans.
It would be quite easy for each postie to say take twenty five houses each extra(from the packet/ van man on you walk)
and there wpould be no woory of how to return the stuff!

I have been looking for something in writing on this without success so apologies - perhaps its an unwritten instruction as opposed to pre-determined willful delay.
