POL: Government Decision - Post Office Card Account (POCA)

We are extremely pleased to report that today James Purnell Secretary of State for Work and Pensions announced to the House of Commons that the POCA contract has unconditionally been awarded to POL beyond 2010. This is a crucial and positive development particularly in the face of competition through an opening tendering process. Undoubtedly this is very good news.

The recent uncertainty and press speculation in terms of POL potentially losing this contract has been destabilising. Thankfully our members in Crown Offices and those in Cash in Transit/Cash Centres who provide money to all Post Offices to be paid out through the POCA can now be reassured that this important work and vital revenue will remain with POL. This is in turn will lead to better job security.

The Government on this occasion has made the right decision which will help to preserve the Post Office Network which is cherished by the public at large. This decision is due in no small part to the activity of this union and many other organisations who shared our objectives and have therefore lobbied and campaigned for the retention of this contract.

Accordingly we wish to thank all Branches and activists who have participated in this campaign. Your efforts are deeply appreciated.
