Am I right in thinking that anyone taking on a floating duty covering rest days will not normally be given Door To Doors to deliver and can not normally expect any payment for Door To Doors ?
I ask this because I have heard of a current part time OPG who intends applying for a vacant full time floating duty covering rest days at a neighbouring office, a duty few if any others are likely to be interested in, but he says he would only take it on if each of the five permanent posties he will be covering give up a proportion of their Door To Doors for him.

At my DO they do 20% and get paid for them. I always leave the same sections for my cover guy to make it easier for him.

d2d`s are supposed to be done mon-fri so if you are covering one of those days you are expected to do 20% and claim 20%

I know this is a continuation of another recent discussion, but I'm really interested in knowing how the payments are made to your floats for DTD deliveries.
Not only is the payment system supposedly a nightmare to work with; (When I was covering someone's leave last year, the Duty holder was accidentally paid for the DTDs I delivered. After a couple of weeks of attempts to resolve the mistake, the ONLY solution my Office could come up with was that the duty holder would need to pay me the money back in cash!!). Do you work it so that every 5 weeks the float will be paid for the entire walks deliveries and hope that it evens out over time with the different numbers of types and prices per item etc. If so how do you account for holidays during etc. How do you account for the different sizes of each walk? how do you agree a delivery schedule on a per day basis with each duty holder? I tend to look at the weeks weather forecast and deliver larger percentages on better days and on lighter days.
I honestly cannot see any way it can work, without several arguments, problems cries of unfairness etc. please enlighten me!

officially it is 20% a day, but in our office whoever is on it on the monday can throw off all and deliver where they go, then it all gets delivered by the end of the week and everyone gets a chance, it works for us! But every office seems to have it's own peculiarities.

But isn't there a problem with this though. Assuming you're working a 5 day week with a rotating day off.The person doing the cover duty (unless it's his Saturday off) will end up doing the d2ds EVERY day, whereas the regular duty holder will only do them for 4 days out of 5 (unless it's his Saturday off). If that makes any sense?

At our DO some of the duties are rotating days off and some are fixed days off.
If on a rotating day off everyone does 20% per day which means 100% is done 80% by walk holder and if during week 20% by cover duty. If day off is Saturday none should be done so walk holder does all 100%.
On a fixed day off the cover men have Saturdays off every week (so they get a long weekend) but they have to do 20% on each walk they cover - this means that they do 5 x 20% = 100% .
So everyone does the same amount unless their day off is Saturday. So you see if your a cover man and do 100% D2Ds (in effect) your reward is a long weekend. If you do only 80% you don't get a long weekend. Sounds like a case of swings and roundabouts you gain in one thing and loose in another so all in all its a very fair system.
If however you decide to work 6 days to make extra money - well that's your choice and you take the bad things that come with working 6 days as well as the good things.

I would still like someone to explain how the claiming and payment system is done to account for a Float working a rotating duty.
The most workable delivery system I can envisage is that the Float is assigned a 20% block which never changes. However I can also guarantee that the Regular duty holder will do their level best to offload a 20% block containing the gates and long driveways with the dangerous dogs and tiny or low down or vertical letterboxes etc. instead of what would be fairer i.e. that which would take 20% of the total delivery time for all DTD items.

I cover days off at my DO and I don't do any d2d's unless I'm on that round for the entire week. Fair enough I'm missing out on £12 - £20 per week but I really don't mind tbh.

That how me and my cover guy arranged it. We discussed which streets he should take and came to an agreement its not quite 20% that he takes in fact its around 17% but we have agreed to it and both are happy. I did suggest that I put them all in the frame and he takes where he was going on Thursdays and I would agree to him claiming his full 20%. But he does not like to sort into a frame with D2Ds in it even if he would have less to deliver . So we are both happy with our own agreement and both get on with it.Himaggen wrote:I would still like someone to explain how the claiming and payment system is done to account for a Float working a rotating duty.
