Deputy Managers - Worse than strike breakers?

Post by pickaname »

Anyone else have this problem in their office?

When regular postmen get to become a temp pro rata deputy manager, their attitude changes and they become absolute b***tards? Ive noticed this recently. They think by being utterly ruthless they may get the position permanently? lol...

When theyre not pretending to be a governor its ok for them to cut off or p*** off early, but when they go to the dark side for a week or two suddenly they become totalitarian.

The current management strategy seems to be only to employ yes men in management rather than employing people who can do the job properly

Stepford Managers

Post by baldrick »

In my MC it does seem like some of the most dodgy OPGs go acting when they are getting into trouble
for sickness or conduct. They are sent off for 'training'. When they turn up on the floor as acting Managers
they rush round exhorting people to sort faster, and seem to develop an addiction for frequent 'tick-offs' -
ie going round taking all the staffs' names/duty numbers in their work areas, and checking them off against
the staffing record for that area. These people were often the worst offenders for working slowly and
disappearing from the floor. We reckon they undergo some sort of lobotomy at the training course, and are
reprogrammed like in the 'Stepford Wives' film.
I don't think they are worse than strike breakers (nothing is) unless they were also strike breakers, which some were.

the price of everything and the value of nothing - everyone has a price apparently

there was a time people were told they wouldn't be made acting unless they were female or ethnic minority : - that was the " big idea " to " change ' the macho laddish culture - it meant there was some terrible acting managers due to illegal positive discrimination

seen this happen in another Industry - you just got clones and corruption with " Animal House Management " - :lfo would say everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet - " Nearer to my God than thee " as played by the Titantic ship band would the most apt one .

Certainly poor selection and recruitment - no experience of dealing with a unionised industry at Senior level which filters down to Area that are on fixed term contracts and subject to :lfo 's appraisals - hence the poor IR

In another Industry they got rid of them as they'd outlived their usefulness - they got found out - can't see it happening with RM though

Long line of cause and effect which leads all the way back to :lfo & :cfo - To be fair , if I was acting I'd would have had 4 out of the building in one section - bang to rights - good for morale - however I'd be in Uniform forever afterwards and would probably be joining those 4 on some trumped up charge .

There's plenty of people who could do it - ex forces , supermarket / retail etc but wouldn't touch it with a bargepole - :lfo - that's why !

the use of acting managers seems to be widespread. It's easier to exploit people who are permanently on tenterhooks.

They are usually the lasiest b_______s in the office who then make ideal dark side material.

When a postman becomes a line manager in the same office he was a postie, it's not a good move in my experience they make terrible managers, they become like a little hitler, if they want to be a manager they should be moved to another office. It will never work, no RESPECT from me, you have to earn that. :speak to the hand :speak to the hand

Our current DOM was formerly a postman here about 17 years ago and I have to say he is doing a reasonable job, even though he toes the line with regard to RM policy, he has been a delivery postman, is familiar with the area and is fair minded and does not subscribe to the favouritism that has flourished in recent years, so all in all it has been an improvement. Though some would disagree I am sure.

your DOM would say he's paid to toe the RM line - however I do remember telling one gaffer when I was working during on strike days for a Contracting Firm in a service industry ( which was allowed on here ) about RM and he was staggered by the amount of politics - his view was you are supposed to be running a business

it's always been done in the public sector - two choices nowadays victimisation or neutralize them - it's like Fozziebear says a Union rep in a suit who has crossed that line to the dark side against a Union rep - IR from hell

With the odd one - at least they knew the job which is more than can be said for some
