Sick Pay?

What's the situation with sick pay during your first year? I have heard you don't get it, even if it's due to an accident on duty, which seems a bit harsh.
Anyone know the official line or whether theres any discretion allowed? Any help much appreciated, cheers.

I think that is correct mate no sick pay from Royal Mail for new entrants for a year

They must get something from the social or some other benifit agency,how can someone with a family live with no money

The worst agreement our union ever signed IMHO

SSP will be payable because that comes from the government but that said RM will try anything to mess with you so expect to be messed around

I think that's disgraceful that Royal Mail can't provide some sort of sick pay. I realise that people go off sick quite often, and it would cost them a fortune to pay everyone, but for a genuine case, particularly with a GP's certificate, or after an accident on duty, I think they should look after their employees. I know I couldn't keep my home and family going on SSP, and I can't afford accident and sickness insurance, so if that's how Royal Mail treat their employees I'm glad I don't work for them.

i hurt my back on duty in my 1st year
had 2 weeks off SSP and had to go back to work as i couldnt afford to stay off longer
had a painful couple of weeks
even requested if i could use any holidays due but got a knock back

If you've had an accident on duty and it's been recorded with royal mail,get in touch with your branch and put in the appropriate claims forms.When you speak to the solicitor make sure to tell him to claim for loss of earnings as a result of your a.o.d.

This may be no use to you in the short term but it's probably the only chance you have of getting the money back.

I'm no firms man but you certainly have to go a long way to find a business that finances sick pay these days.

My wife has worked for the same company for almost 20 years and doesn't get anything other than SSP, my son works for another company which has private medical care but doesn't pay for sickness absence, both my daughters work for companies who don't pay sickness absence, one is on a buying trip to China for the Company and the other in private health care.

So out of the five of us I'm the only one who receives full pay for sickness absence.

You can't get surplus value out of cripples and sickies,there's just no profit in them. To compete in a modern and efficient fashion companies must let the lame ducks fall by the wayside, if they are really sick and can not provide for themselves then removing support will shorten the agony. That's capitalism ( but it doesn't apply to city bankers)

Take advantage of this while you can, as soon as we are privatised you'll never guess one of the first things to go. :mfo

actually i used to work for a company that had a great system
you got an xmas bonus
1 weeks pay for every year worked for the company up to 4 weeks pay
for every day off sick you lost 5% of your bonus
20 days off in a year and no bonus,this actually rewarded those who didnt go off sick
okay if you were genuine it was unfortunate but sick pay was still paid

The CWU never signed into giving new entrants no full sick pay it was done by RM unilaterally every year the union does try to get it reversed

Im sure a rep told me a few years ago that John Keggie agreed to this when he was DGSP

If im wrong then apologies to the CWU

,but we need to try harder to get that action reversed and sick pay given to new entrants imho.
