Floaters Rights
Ive been asked to try and get some advice about this by a friend at work.
He is a floater on the same 5 duties every week covering the days off of the duty holders.
However, the duty holders are working their days off quite regularly at the moment and therefore he is getting moved here, there and everywhere, often not knowing until he walks in the door every morning.
So in a nutshell, is this right? Or as it is his assigned float is he entitled to cover his set duties.
Personally I think that if someone wants to work their day off they should be prepared to cover whatever duty neccessery. Why should someone else suffer just cos they want to earn extra cash/brownie points.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Speedy
im a bit confused here, your friend is i believe what we at my place call a Rest Day cover man,he as you say covers 5 walks over the week(at my place they cover 2 as we work a 4 day week)and has his own day off.You must have a few of these duties in the office,is the same thing going on with them?Anyway this must STOP right away as its wrong,if these guys want to come in and do docket they will have to do it on a duty which does not have a RDC on it(unlees they are off on leave or sick and a reserve has not signed for it)and take the walks out that your mate is being made to.What a fecking piss take that is
and the manager is out of order for letting it happen.

This happens all the time in my office, so if there is any official guidleines it would be appreciated
but if the people coming in are not allowed to do their own duty then they just don't come in which leaves gaps in the delivery.

You and as many of your colleagues as possible need to sort this out a bit sharpish.Tell your Dom and rep that this must stop from now and let your area rep and branch chairperson know what is going on asap.If need be some one needs to stand against this guy when the local rep election comes up and oust him, then sit down with your Dom and knock up some new local agreements that everyone is happy with.Go for it Speedy mate.

Have a look in the way forward agreement, that covers staff being moved off there duty, what they are doing to your mate is wrong, they could do it for maybe one day, but then they have to go thru the office, they can not pick on one person to continually move when he has a duty.speedy wrote:anything official on this that i could print off?

You have signed for a floater duty which is exactly what it say's, a duty, just because you cover 5 different walks doesn't make it any different, look at it this way, if you wanted to come in on your day off would you be able to dis-place one of the guy's you cover for? i think not, so you have exactly the same rights. it's your duty that you signed for.

Happened to me a few years back guys working there day off and me getting mucked about....I was assigned a floating duty so i have the same rights as guys that signed for there duties....So i took it up with the Union and the management so the outcome was i do the duty and the guy working his day off becomes the floater...The management found out the guys were not willing to be floaters on their day off but i was not for backing down...The outcome i get allocated a walk and everybody's happy......Its worth fighting for...... Even though you are a floater YOU HAVE RIGHTS...

This happens to me as well. I am a floater for a rural group. If the DOM is short staffed he asks the one in my group whose day off it is if they will work it. He responds that he will work it but only if it is his own duty. DOM agrees and I get f*cked about by being put on another duty. I said to my DOM that If he wants me to work my day off then I should get to choose but he said that he wouldnt ask me then. I had no witnesses otherwise a grievance would have went in.

In our area every delivery, on the intro of TWF 5 day week, was given the option/chance to perform thier day off as an S/A, and were given first refusal for the s/a as it was identical to their mon-sat duty. Those that took their day off forfited the s/a and also lost earning potential for the office as their day off needed to be covered so a cover duty was created. If the cover duty was created specifically to cover these duties days off then the holders have given away the right to claim it as theirs under the way we operate.
All depends really, stand your ground don't budge from this point of view, unfortunately under one of billy and dave's all encompassing two year agreements, which, is by and large regarded as sh*t, although is more commonly know as the Pay and Modernisation agreement, you must do what you're told even if you know its wrong and fill out an individual grievance proceedure form. This will get you abso-f*ck*ng-lutely nowhere.
As an individual initially there appears to be no hope, what you need to do is get everyone who is affected together, demand an EGM of your office with the motion to stop this action and if need be arrange the time and date of the meeting. If you have to have it without the rep then so be it, you can also under AOB discuss your reps actions, if possible identify a deputy rep, put them forward for the postion and go to them at all times bypassing the current rep.
